Sooo, How Do Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Feel About King Charles’ Latest Statement On Them?

Earlier this week Buckingham Palace released an official statement regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s return to the UK — and, specifically, what that means for their status with the royal family and the public.

The letter, written on behalf of King Charles, stated:
“To help avoid doubt or confusion, the King has directed that the following information be shared.”
Already sounding like a royal “per my last email,” LOLz!
“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family. This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.”
Okay, okay, not so bad, right? Just honoring their wishes!
“It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used.”
By the way, abeyance is defined as a temporary pause, inactivity, or suspension.
“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
Translation: Whatever charities or organizations they choose to represent are of their own accord — not the royal family’s!
“Any specific questions from official and State organisations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace. Any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant Police authorities.”
So all in all, no big deal right? Welllll… maybe not according to certain insiders claiming to be connected to the Spare author and his wife. You see, sources for the extremely reliable People magazine are now, in the mag’s own words, pushing back on the statement, saying:
“They are public figures. Members of the public know who they are. The idea that they can live a normal, ‘private’ life is sadly not realistic.”
Well, sure, they’re publicly known and notable, but the Palace’s statement just meant they’re no longer on the public’s dime, right? No longer performing public duties on behalf of the royal family and all that? That’s how we read it anyway.
Still, per People‘s understanding, the sources connected to the Archewell duo claim they were “surprised” by the letter — especially since they apparently weren’t given a heads up on it, which we can understand would have been a courteous gesture.
Sigh, we really hope this doesn’t complicate matters. We’ve so been looking forward to the entire family healing their rifts with this new chapter!
