Sony Pictures has unveiled the trailer for “The Social Reckoning. ” a sequel to the 2010 Oscar-winning drama “The Social Network.” Sixteen years after that original film tracked the rise of Facebook. this follow-up turns to what came next: whistleblower revelations as the platform matured into a global force.
The cast brings that shift into focus. Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong headline the movie, with Strong stepping into the role of Mark Zuckerberg. In the original film, Zuckerberg was played by Jesse Eisenberg—Strong now taking over the character for Sorkin’s sequel.
Aaron Sorkin returns to the franchise doing double duty as writer and director. His role expands from the 2010 film era after he won an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay for “The Social Network.” In “The Social Reckoning. ” the story centers on the true story of former Facebook engineer Frances Haugen. played by Madison. and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. played by White. Their reporting exposed the company’s internal research and decision-making. and their work culminated in “The Facebook Files” in 2021—an investigative series that revealed Facebook’s harmful effects on teens and its role in spreading misinformation. including content linked to political violence.
When the trailer premiered at this year’s CinemaCon, the annual convention for theater owners, Sorkin explained why the sequel needed to exist beyond nostalgia. “There isn’t a life that Facebook’s algorithm hasn’t touched, and that influence has shaped everything. So it’s time to say more.”
The business side of “The Social Network” still looms behind the new release. The 2010 film was both a critical and commercial success. grossing $226 million worldwide and earning eight Academy Award nominations. including best picture. It went on to win three Oscars and has since been widely cited as one of Hollywood’s most influential portrayals of the tech industry.
Sorkin is producing “The Social Reckoning” alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser. Sony plans to release the film in theaters on Oct. 9.
