Sony may be discontinuing video game discs — but there’s still a way to get physical copies

Sony recently faced backlash from the gaming community after revealing its plans to discontinue physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028.

However, PC game retailer GOG has heard gaming fans and is ensuring they know they fully own the games they purchase from its website and can preserve them on physical discs.

Tomb Raider I-VI Remastered

This bundle of the classic “Tomb Raider” series includes the six main-line titles in their original graphics and updated to play on modern PCs and consoles. It’s the same epic adventure featuring Lara Croft that you enjoyed in your childhood now available for current devices. Luckily, they give you the option to easily switch from the (headache-inducing) tank controls to modern controls whenever you need. For me, that was the entire time I played “Tomb Raider I.”

Buy Now on GOG

The retailer has been releasing posts on X in the past two months explaining exactly how to burn the games you purchase from GOG to CDs.

Millennials know all too well how to do that from back in the day when Apple Music was iTunes, and LimeWire was the place to find free music.

“Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc and it’s yours forever,” GOG said on X. “You don’t need a storefront’s permission to play what you bought.”

You can download and burn games from GOG’s entire library because they are all DRM free, meaning they have no copy protection or digital locks. And these popular AAA games, both modern and classic, include “Tomb Raider,” “Resident Evil” and “Baldur’s Gate 3.”

Burning them onto discs ensures that games you purchase are protected from server shutdowns or hacks.

Here’s exactly how to save the PC games you purchase on GOG to discs.

How to preserve your GOG games on discs

The process for burning your GOG games to discs is easier than you’d think.

  1. Log into your GOG library.
  2. Navigate to the game you want to burn.
  3. Download the game’s offline backup game installer.
  4. Confirm what the file size of the game to choose for the right disc type.
  5. Burn the game file onto the disc. YouTuber Archades Games details the DVDs, CDs and Blu-Ray discs and burners to use here.
  6. Store your games in a jewel case or a game box (with custom art for fun). You can also check eBay, Mercari, Etsy and Facebook Marketplace for original game boxes.

Other ways to store your GOG PC games — that may be faster and more practical — would be to save them on an external hard drive, network attached storage (NAS) or cloud storage.

Either way, you’re still keeping ownership of your games for years to come without having to rely on a launcher, server or Wi-Fi.
