Sony keeps disc re-orders for pre-2028 PlayStation games

Sony keeps – Sony’s shift away from physical PlayStation game discs after January 2028 still threatens retail, but a private note to developers and publishers offers a lifeline: physical games released before the cut-off can be re-ordered, while Sony says it will also enab

A deadline that felt aimed straight at retail is still standing—Sony says physical PlayStation game discs will be discontinued after January 2028. But for developers and publishers, there’s a small, very specific consolation buried inside the change.

Sony’s post on the PlayStation blog said the discontinuation would have “no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.” In other words, if a game hits disc before the cut-off, Sony is not pulling it midstream.

Now. a separate report adds another piece: Sony shared a private message with PlayStation developers and publishers stating they “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.” As the industry reacts to the loss of new physical releases. that detail matters. It suggests publishers can keep supplying shelves with discs for titles that already qualify—at least through the re-order path Sony is allowing.

The same report says Sony warned that its disc ordering process will change, without explaining how yet. That uncertainty hangs over the next phase of the business. because Sony has reportedly already invested millions of dollars into repurposing its disc factory in Salzburg. Austria to manufacture optical microlenses instead. The physical-disc era isn’t just winding down on paper—it’s being retooled on the factory floor.

Sony’s message also offered an alternative route to retail. It said it will “provide publishers with the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes. ” while still withholding the specifics of how those codes would work. The promise is meant to reduce the sting for gamers who don’t want their game purchases locked to a single online store ecosystem. Even so. the overall shift away from physical discs is still expected to land as a major change across the industry. not just a technical tweak.

Those competing timelines—no impact for disc games released before January 2028. re-orders allowed for existing disc titles. and a new retail model built around digital codes—create a narrow window of certainty while the rest of the retail landscape waits for details. One thing is clear: Sony is moving on from discs. but it’s trying to keep publishers from being left empty-handed overnight.

  1. So basically they’re done with discs but still letting you reorder stuff? That seems like a loop hole that’ll disappear anyway.

  2. I don’t get why they can’t just keep making discs. My brother bought a used PS4 game last month and it worked fine so this whole January 2028 thing feels overhyped.

  3. “Digital codes” at retail sounds like they’ll just sell you an unlock key and call it a physical release. Re-order discs until 2028 then switch it up… I’ve seen this movie.

  4. They say no impact on games released before Jan 2028, but then they’re changing the ordering process and stopping disc games… so are they still making new copies or not? Also Salzburg repurposing the factory into optical microlenses? Like that means they’ll stop discs sooner because the factory’s not disc-ready anymore, right? Retail is gonna get screwed either way.
