Sony closes PS3 and Vita digital stores in phases

Sony closes – Sony plans to shut down the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita in stages: PS3 closes in select Latin American markets starting in August, more countries follow late 2026, and the remaining regions end in July 2027. After the cutoffs, players won’t be able to

For PS3 and PS Vita owners, the PlayStation Store is starting to feel less like a storefront and more like a door that’s slowly being pulled shut.

Sony says it is planning to shut down its digital distribution service on both consoles in phases. The PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in select markets later this year. with Mexico. Honduras. and Nicaragua scheduled to lose access starting in August. Sony also said “additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries” will be added in late 2026.

The timeline tightens again after that. Sony says the shutdown across both PS3 and PS Vita in “all other countries” will take effect in July 2027.

After those deadlines, console owners will be unable to purchase new content. Sony’s message to players is that the lights don’t go fully out right away: users can continue downloading games they’ve previously purchased “for the foreseeable future” after the shutdown date passes.

That matters because the consoles themselves are aging fast in public consciousness, even as their stores still feel like home. Sony pointed to the PS3 turning 20 years old and the PS Vita turning 15 years old this year. and for many players that longevity has meant years of accumulating digital libraries.

In its announcement. Sony acknowledged the emotional side of the change. writing: “We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming.” The company added that. as it expands the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most users are playing on today. it needs to “focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.”.

There’s also a second, quietly unsettling layer to the decision: digital store closures don’t happen in isolation when physical media is also being wound down. Sony is gearing up to cease all production of physical PlayStation discs for games released after January 2028.

Put those two moves together and the practical worry comes into focus: if future releases rely less on discs. and older storefronts eventually disappear. what happens to games as the years pass and storefront lifespans run out—especially for players who didn’t buy every title they ever wanted the first time around.
