Sonny Gray strikes out the side as Sox win 9-1

Sonny Gray turned an early Cleveland scare into a smooth six-inning outing, striking out the side in the sixth as the Boston Red Sox beat the Guardians 9-1 for his sixth win of the season.
The Boston Red Sox were still dealing with the familiar ache of early-season instability when Sonny Gray set the tone Saturday—then slowly shut the door.
In the first inning, Cleveland wasted no time. Back-to-back doubles led off the game and the Guardians jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. The start looked like another rough chapter for Boston, a team that has routinely struggled with first-inning problems this season. But by the time Gray handed the ball over after six innings. the damage was contained and the game belonged to the Red Sox.
Gray went six innings for the third time this month. posting his latest strong start in a 9-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. The 36-year-old right-hander’s line steadied as quickly as the game tilted: he allowed four hits. one run. three walks and struck out seven. All seven of his strikeouts came on breaking balls.
Cleveland threatened in the middle innings, too. Gray allowed a single and a walk in the second inning and then a leadoff walk in the third. But after that, nothing came of the traffic. He settled in, kept Cleveland from turning baserunners into runs, and worked through 92 pitches—58 of them for strikes.
After the game, Gray described the turning point as an adjustment made in real time. He said Cleveland’s hitters, especially their left-handed batters, were looking to pull the ball. Once he changed what he was doing, the results followed.
“They jumped me early and it just felt like we needed to make an adjustment,” Gray told reporters. “Being able to execute that – the adjustment – was nice. That was a fun one.”
In his sixth and final inning, Gray ended it the way every starter hopes to: by striking out the side. He connected that late success to the earlier change.
“I definitely felt like I got stronger, but also I changed what I was doing a little bit,” Gray said.
The numbers back up how much Boston has leaned on him. Gray collected 14 swings-and-misses and lowered his ERA to 3.06 for the year. Through five starts in May, he owned a 2.00 ERA and reached the six-inning mark in three of those outings. He also allowed just one home run in 27 innings this month.
That kind of consistency matters even more because the Red Sox haven’t had the easiest path to stability. Ace Garrett Crochet has been out since April 29 with left shoulder inflammation, forcing the rotation to step up. From Ranger Suarez to Gray. Boston’s starters have answered the challenge—Gray in particular continuing to separate his performance from the season’s broader grind.
For the Red Sox, the payoff is already clear. Boston is 7-3 in Gray’s starts, and he has earned six victories. The veteran—now in his 14th MLB season—has been paid $31 million this year and carries a $30 million mutual option with a $10 million buyout in 2027.
With the season still early. it’s still an open question whether the Red Sox will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. But Saturday’s win didn’t just add another tally to Gray’s record. It reinforced a storyline Boston can’t ignore: when the lineup needs steadiness and the rotation needs someone to take command. Gray has been doing exactly that.

9-1?? dang.
So he struck out the side in the 6th and then they just stopped? That’s crazy because I feel like the Sox always get jumped in the first inning. Early-season instability solved by one pitcher I guess.
Wait “six-inning outing” but he got his sixth win?? That part confused me. Also all 7 K’s on breaking balls sounds like he was just throwing junk the whole time. Like did Cleveland even adjust or are they always that predictable with lefties? I’m not sure I watched, just saw the headline.
Idk why but this reads like a movie plot lol. They get two doubles right away and then it’s just “adjustment made in real time” and suddenly no runs. I hate when baseball articles cut off mid-quote too… like what did he say after “the…”?? Anyway, Sox 9-1 is a good look but Guardians choking in the middle innings is the real story.
