Friday night in Washington didn’t feel like a game you could write off early. The Mystics were shaky to start the 2026 season, and yet, when the last seconds arrived, they found the shot they needed.

Sonia Citron took it.

With Washington trailing 85-84 in the last two seconds. the team won a jump ball and Citron came up with the possession. She then fired the ball as the clock wound down—and it went down. turning a tense finish into a full-throttle crowd moment. Washington’s 85-84 win over the Toronto Tempo hinged on those final plays, and Citron owned them.

Citron is in her second WNBA season with the Mystics. a place she earned by making an early impact as a rookie. She landed on the league’s All-Rookie team. and this season has shown a continued push forward—more involvement in Washington’s offense. more activity in creating shots. and more responsibility when the game asks for it.

Against Toronto, she logged 34 minutes and produced a complete stat line. Citron finished with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Her shooting read 6-of-16 from the field. including 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. and she also went 4-of-5 from the free-throw line—numbers that don’t always tell the whole story. except the last moment did.

The Mystics didn’t need just one player to stand out. Five Washington players scored in double digits in the win. Lauren Betts led the way with 18 points, four rebounds and two steals. Michaela Onyenwere added 17 points and eight rebounds. Shakira Austin contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds. Angela Dugalic chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

There’s a clear through-line to how the night unfolded: Washington’s offense produced enough across multiple scorers, then Citron’s possession at the end turned that balance into a result.

With the victory, the Mystics improved to a 5-6 record and held the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. That places them above the Chicago Sky and the Connecticut Sun, while they sit behind the Toronto Tempo and the Indiana Fever.

The buzzer-beater didn’t end the season’s story for Washington—it just wrote its most dramatic line. The Mystics will be back on the road next, taking on the New York Liberty as the game commences on June 14 at 3 p.m. ET.
