Sofía Vergara’s World Cup problem: ticketing family battles

Sofía Vergara is gearing up for an unforgettable World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada—but she says the hardest part isn’t cheering for Colombia. It’s deciding which of her relatives get to join her at the matches, as she can’t fit everyone in

Sofía Vergara is counting down to the moment she can turn her summer into a family-and-football tradition—until she hits the same wall everyone hits when the tickets don’t stretch to match the wish list.

The Colombian actress says she’s ready for a World Cup full of soccer, family gatherings, and national pride as FIFA World Cup attention builds across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. She’s even helped stoke excitement with a Telemundo commercial alongside Owen Wilson.

Vergara says the tournament feels like a rare opening to do what she calls “what we do when we come together,” building the day around food, togetherness, and the easy noise of people arguing and laughing.

“It’s been good and bad because, like, for example, I’m going to be able to watch some games with them together,” she told PEOPLE. “We’re going to be able to do what we do when we come together, which is eat and put together the family and everything.”

But that togetherness comes with a catch. Vergara says the World Cup has sparked “some problems” of its own—because she can’t make every game, and she can’t take everyone who wants to go.

“It’s also created some problems because I am going to be able to go to some games, and I cannot get all of them in the games,” she said.

She already has key dates penciled in. Vergara says she’ll be in Los Angeles for Colombia’s first game on U.S. soil on June 12. She also plans to attend the World Cup Final outside New York on July 19, and expects to be at additional matches in New York throughout the competition.

That leaves a crowded house of relatives hoping for a seat—and a smaller window for her to choose who can join her.

“It’s been kind of like a little bit of a struggle to pick who deserves to go to the World Cup,” the Barranquilla-born actress, 53, said. “But it’s all been fun!”

The emotional logistics of the ticket battle are only part of what’s keeping her excited. Vergara also has a reason to look forward to the final whistle that goes beyond the stadium.

Shakira—Vergara’s fellow Colombian superstar and longtime friend—is set to perform during the World Cup Final Halftime Show. Vergara says Shakira reached out to check whether she’d be in Los Angeles.

“I don’t even want to name-drop, but she texted me yesterday,” Vergara revealed. “She asked me if I was going to be in L.A. for the games.”

Vergara said she’s already anticipating what that performance will look and feel like.

“I’m very excited because I’m sure she’s going to give a hell of a show like she always does. And she’s very excited to do it. It’s going to be amazing. For sure, I’m going to watch her,” she said.

When Vergara isn’t at the matches in person, she plans to celebrate Colombia’s World Cup journey from home, surrounded by loved ones. For her, the ideal game-day rhythm isn’t only what happens on the field—it’s what happens around it.

The actress describes her perfect World Cup moment as “good food, good music, and good things to drink,” paired with the chance to be together. “When you’re together, that’s when you really get to enjoy each other and eat, and fight, and complain and it’s fun,” she said.

  1. Wait is this the FIFA thing where they’re like you can’t bring your whole family? Because that seems like a normal problem, not like a celebrity problem. I mean, if she really wanted she would just buy more tickets right? Unless they’re doing those “only certain people get access” rules. Still kinda wild.

  2. June 12 in LA right? But didn’t Mexico/Canada teams mess up the schedule or whatever? I saw somewhere that the tickets are “sold out” but then people get them anyway through insiders, so like… is she saying she can’t take everyone because of that. Also her commercial with Owen Wilson doesn’t help my brain for some reason, like I feel like she’s acting her way through it.

  3. This article makes it sound like the World Cup is hard because she can’t fit relatives into seats like it’s a plane. But isn’t it just… buy the right number of tickets? I swear celebrities act like “family tradition” means they should have special access. Also, if she can only go to some games, then how is it still “unforgettable”? Maybe she should just livestream and invite everyone to her place like normal people, idk.
