Snap and YouTube settle Kentucky school addiction suit

Snap and YouTube have reportedly reached a settlement in a Kentucky school district case over alleged student harm from addictive apps, just weeks before trial.
Snap and YouTube have reportedly put another legal fight over alleged social media addiction behind them, settling a case with a Kentucky school district weeks before it was set to go to trial.
The dispute was being watched more closely than many others because it was the first scheduled for trial. It’s part of a wider wave of lawsuits across the country claiming that social media platforms harmed students through addictive design.
In a statement carried in reporting on the matter, YouTube said the case had been “amicably resolved,” adding that it would continue working on “age-appropriate products.” Snap similarly described the settlement as “amicable.”
The Kentucky case has not been the only one in the mix.. Meta and TikTok are also listed as defendants in the same lawsuit. and the court date still looming for the broader litigation is next month in Oakland. California. where a trial is due to start.. Even with this Kentucky resolution. both companies remain tied to other school-district complaints. including suits involving districts in New York and Seattle.
This settlement arrives as courts have continued to scrutinize the tactics behind popular apps. Earlier this year, Snap also chose to settle another high-profile social media addiction lawsuit in Los Angeles, where a jury ultimately ruled against Meta and YouTube.
For Meta, the legal pressure has continued beyond addiction claims. The company has argued that “social media addiction is not real,” and it was also recently ordered to pay a $375 million fine after losing a major civil trial in New Mexico over its safety practices.
With the Kentucky fight now settled, the central question shifts to what happens next in the still-pending cases—especially as multiple school districts seek accountability over how these platforms are built and marketed to young users.
