Sleepless on a train, Vienna ruined—until rest won
sleep mattered – After a sleepless 12-hour overnight train ride, a first-time backpacker in Vienna rushed to book a hotel room for a nap—paying for the whole night—only to realize the trip was falling apart without sleep. The experience reshaped how they planned every stop acr
Dazed, depleted, and desperate to doze, she stepped into Vienna for the first time at 7 a.m. after a sleepless night on an overnight train. The plan had been simple: see the sights in the morning, then check in to her Airbnb at 3 p.m. Instead, her body made the schedule.
This was October 2022, when she took a two-week backpacking trip across four European countries—Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. The route included a red-eye flight and two sleeper train rides. and she chose to travel through the night to squeeze more days into each destination. On the train from Berlin to Vienna, she rode in a regular seat in a six-passenger carriage. The seats reclined. but they didn’t lie fully flat. and the cramped space—with limited legroom—felt like a tight squeeze for six people. The result was blunt: she got zero sleep during the 12-hour ride.
The moment she got off the train, it was obvious she couldn’t keep her original plan. Her eyes weren’t on Vienna’s streets yet. They were on beds. She started going into nearby hotels to book a room, and by the third hotel she found one. She had to pay for the whole night even though she was only taking a nap. but she decided the cost was worth it for a safe. comfortable place to rest.
Travel, she learned, is different when you’re running on nothing. Without rest, she said, traveling is a drag—and if she doesn’t take time to rest, her body will force it, even at the least convenient times.
Before the nap, she barely paid attention to how Vienna looked or felt. She was too tired to notice the architecture around her. After she rested, though, everything shifted. When she woke up and walked to her Airbnb after the nap. she remembered why she was there and felt a new wave of excitement about the trip.
Sleep didn’t just make the city more enjoyable—it pulled her back into her own body. The next morning. as soon as she got to the hotel. she chugged her water bottle while trying to remember the last time she’d had anything to drink. She realized she must have been dehydrated. From that point on, she took every opportunity to keep her bottle full.
When you’re visiting a country for just a couple of days, it’s easy to stuff exploration into every hour without building in downtime. But she found that without rest, it wasn’t enjoyable. Keeping herself in good health became the priority for the remainder of her trip—and for all her travels since.
The lesson landed in a way only a real travel day can deliver: not as advice, but as a moment when the itinerary stopped working and rest took over.
