There are a few comforts that never really feel optional when you’re out backpacking—the kind that keep you warm enough to sleep and stable enough to wake up without feeling like you lost a fight overnight.

I’ve tested a lot of inflatable sleeping pads, and I’ve had very few problems with any of them. Some have lost air, but I’ve never had one deflate completely—at least not yet.

Still, “mostly fine” is not the same as “set-and-forget.” A few small choices can turn a decent night into something closer to miserable, and the fixes are usually simple.

Don’t inflate your pad with your mouth. Some pads are huge, and it’s just a pain. More than that. your breath is warm and moist. and you’re pushing that moisture into nylon—a setup that can invite mildew and mold. It’s possible to overstate the fear; some people have cut open pads they inflated by mouth for years and found no sign of mold. Even so, it’s a lot easier to avoid the hassle in the first place. Most manufacturers include some kind of pump sack now, which makes inflating quick. There are also motorized pumps that weigh an ounce or two, like the Flextail pump.

Over-inflating is the next common trap. Insulated sleeping pads work by putting air and material between you and the cold ground. but “insulated” doesn’t mean you need to inflate until it’s taut. It varies by pad. and I’ve found the best method is to inflate it taut first. then start letting out air while lying down—testing until it feels comfortable.

The tradeoff: if you let out too much, the pad isn’t as thick and you’re more likely to bottom out. That usually isn’t a big deal for stomach or back sleepers. Side sleepers, though, may have to spend more time finding the sweet spot between comfort and warmth.

And when things do go wrong, be ready. Most sleeping pads include a patch kit, but I rarely bring those. Instead. I carry a small roll of Tenacious Tape. which costs $6 and can handle rips and tears in sleeping pads to tents. Don’t skip the small test first—test a small piece of tape on your pad beforehand to make sure the tape sticks. Also bring an alcohol wipe to clean the affected area.

Warmth is where the real math comes in. Women generally have lower body mass than men. which means women should add roughly 1 R-value to get the same amount of insulation in the same situation. The guidance isn’t just gender-specific either. If you’re a cold sleeper in general, upping the R-value is recommended.

Then there’s the part that surprises people most: sleeping bag temperature ratings assume a specific kind of pad. Most temp ratings you see on sleeping bags are true only if you’re using a sleeping pad with an R-value of 5 or higher. and they also assume you’re wearing a base layer. If your pad is less, you’ll need to adjust the sleeping bag temp rating accordingly.

For example, using a 30 degree quilt with a R4 pad will likely leave you cold if you encounter freezing temps. In that situation, you’d want to either raise the pad’s R-value or bring a warmer sleeping bag.

Taken together. it’s a pretty clear pattern: the pads themselves usually hold up. but the comfort you get depends on how you inflate them. how much air you let out. whether you’re prepared to patch them fast. and whether your R-value matches both your body and your sleeping system. When those pieces line up, the night feels quiet again.
