The celebration after the Knicks’ Game 5 NBA Finals win turned deadly fast in Times Square.
Around 43rd Street and Broadway, a 17-year-old was shot during post-game celebrations, according to law enforcement accounts. The incident left one teenager injured amid what police described as widespread chaos across New York City.
Authorities said the NYPD, not an ambulance, transported the teen victim to the hospital because emergency vehicles were unable to access the area. Police described the crowd as having “completely taken it over.”
At the scene, officials said a firearm was recovered, and three people of interest are currently in custody while the investigation continues.
The same night also brought other violence beyond the shooting. Police sources said there were four slashings and stabbings reported across Manhattan in the aftermath of the game, as celebratory crowds spilled into the streets and crowd control became increasingly difficult.
There was more destruction as well: five school buses were reportedly set on fire or damaged after groups of individuals climbed on them and struck them with bats, according to law enforcement accounts.
Officials also said large crowds overwhelmed several major intersections for hours, refusing to disperse and effectively blocking vehicular traffic through key parts of the city.
With the Knicks’ win fueling massive celebrations, authorities say they’re now confronting the aftermath of a night that included both jubilation and serious criminal activity across multiple locations.
