A school resource officer is under investigation after a video posted online appeared to show him using force on a female student during an arrest near a Moreno Valley high school campus, authorities said.

Riverside County sheriff’s officials are investigating the report that the officer allegedly used excessive force while responding to an altercation less than a block away from the school. according to Deirdre Vickers. spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.. She said a school resource deputy was alerted to a fight between two students just off the school campus at 3:47 p.m.. on Tuesday.

The video was shared by Instagram user Crowntownactivity, who reported the incident occurred less than a mile from Vista del Lago High School. The account user did not disclose his name, citing privacy concerns, and the sheriff’s office did not confirm the location.

In the video, the student is seen on the ground as the school resource officer stands above her while holding her hands, with three other men gathered around them. The footage shows the officer yanking the student and, when she attempted to get up, pushing her to the ground.

Vickers said the use-of-force allegation centers on the effort to detain the student. “While attempting to detain and handcuff one of the juveniles, they pulled away, resulting in a use of force,” she said.

Paramedics were requested and arrived to evaluate the student, who was ultimately taken into custody, the sheriff’s department said. The custody was for suspicion of battery and resisting arrest.

The sheriff’s office said the incident remains under review. “This is an ongoing investigation, and no further details are available at this time,” Vickers said.

Internally, the deputy involved has already been moved out of the school resource program. Officials said he has since been reassigned pending an internal investigation.

“The Riverside Sheriff’s Office takes each use of force very seriously and makes every effort to de-escalate these situations whenever possible,” Vickers said. “As with all use-of-force incidents, a review will be conducted to ensure compliance with our policy and training standards.”

Moreno Valley School District officials said they are aware of the incident and are concerned about the circulating video.. “We’re fully cooperating with the authorities. but we have to respect the integrity and privacy of the ongoing investigation. so at this time we have no additional details to share. ” the district said in a statement.

The district also said it is aware of the footage, “showing the arrest of one of our female students and the way she was treated,” and remains engaged with the investigation as officials work to determine what happened.
