Heavy weather brought rain in the D.C. region Wednesday with gusty thunderstorms on its way as another stretch of late-summer heat and humidity settles over the area.
The National Weather Service said there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across much of the region through Wednesday night, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat. Storms could continue into the overnight hours.
“There will be several more rounds of storms over the next 24 hours,” said Veronica Johnson, 7News First Alert chief meteorologist.
The rough weather crept into the D.C. area just before 1 p.m., triggering a series of NWS warnings powerful storms popped up in parts of the region.
The National Weather Service canceled a severe thunderstorm watch for the D.C. region at around 3:30 p.m., about an hour and a half before it was initially scheduled to end.
Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the week, with highs climbing into the mid-to upper 90s in parts of the region and heat index values reaching 100 to 105 degrees in many areas. Some locations could feel even hotter.
However, Johnson said another round of storms between 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
“(It) could be impacting kids when they get off the school bus.” Johnson said. “Make sure they’ve got their rain gear ready to go.”
Another round of strong to severe storms will be possible with additional thunderstorms in the forecast Friday.
The heat and storm chances are expected to ease heading into Labor Day weekend, with cooler and less humid conditions arriving during the weekend.
Saturday and Sunday should reach the high 80s, and Labor Day temperatures could top out around 80.

Labor Day is still trending on the nice side. Most of the day should be dry and comfortable, with highs in the lower to middle 80s and much lower humidity. A stray shower cannot be completely ruled out, but widespread rain is not expected. Overall, it looks like a very pleasant end to the long weekend.
