Severe storm producing high winds over Phoenix area

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A line of storms has developed, prompting a severe thunderstorm warning for areas including Phoenix, Glendale, and Peoria.

Winds could reach 80 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

A wall of dust was also seen just south of I-8 in southern Maricopa County, which could make its way to the Phoenix area.

High temperatures have reached 111 degrees so far this afternoon. The Extreme Heat Warning expired at 8 p.m. this evening.

Showers and thunderstorms developing south and east of Phoenix could send outflow winds and areas of blowing dust into parts of the Valley tonight. There is also a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the Valley tonight.

It will be a bit cooler Monday, with highs around 108 degrees. A 30% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms is expected Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Tuesday will be cooler still, with an afternoon high around 104 degrees. There will be a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The cooling trend continues Wednesday, with a high of only 101 degrees. It will also remain unsettled, with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday evening. Thursday may only reach 100 degrees, with a slight chance of an afternoon or evening shower or storm.

The end of the workweek looks fairly pleasant by Phoenix standards, with a high around 103 degrees Friday. Temperatures will warm back up next weekend, with highs ranging from 106 to 108 degrees.

A Flood Watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Monday evening for southern Arizona, including Tucson. Across the high country of northern and eastern Arizona, isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue this evening, followed by more widespread storm activity Monday through Thursday.
