Sellers rebuts Mamdani face-of-party narrative after NYC wins

Bakari Sellers pushed back hard on claims that New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani represents the Democratic Party’s future after a wave of House-primary victories backed by him—including wins by candidates supported by Mamdani and the NYC chapter of the Democratic
Bakari Sellers didn’t wait for the post-primaries conversation to settle. He fired back at the idea that Zohran Mamdani’s coalition is proof of where the Democratic Party is headed.
The argument surged after Tuesday night’s results: a trio of candidates backed by Mamdani—and the NYC chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America—won their House primaries. The outcome didn’t just reshape New York’s political scoreboard. It kicked off a broader. national debate about whether Mamdani and his allies could become the defining face of the party. sending moderate Democrats into what one side framed as panic over whether that coalition is too far left to win national elections.
Even before the news cycle moved on, writer Chris Cillizza put a sharp stake in the ground. In a Tuesday night tweet, he suggested the New York primary results showed that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) could win the 2028 Democratic nomination for president. The message was direct, aimed at those skeptical that AOC could be the nominee.
“Those people who keeping telling me there is ‘no way’ @AOC can be the 2028 Democratic nominee… ” Cillizza wrote. “Feel the same way after the New York results tonight?”

Sellers. a longtime voice in Democratic politics. didn’t buy the leap from one set of contests to a national storyline. In a Thursday tweet responding to Cillizza. he argued that the New York results can’t be read as evidence that Mamdani is the face of the Democratic Party—or a reliable indicator of how the broader party will perform.
“ This is silly. Ppl just say stuff. Does the Dem primary not run through the South (the SEC),” Sellers wrote. He continued that lessons can be drawn from New York’s elections, but that Mamdani doesn’t represent the party as a whole and that New York isn’t indicative of a larger pattern.
“A few months ago yall were telling us nyc was swinging right now it’s not?” Sellers said.
He also pointed to electoral outcomes elsewhere, writing that the “fastest rising 2028 contender is a Jewish dem from Georgia,” before adding that “DSA got mollywhopped all throughout the south. Facts.”

The timing of the exchange—Tuesday night hype about what the primaries “prove. ” followed by Sellers’ rapid pushback—underscores how quickly an internal party fight can turn into a national narrative. Tuesday’s winners may be a snapshot of New York Democratic politics. but Sellers argued they should not be treated as a map for the country’s next nomination battle.
For now, the debate is set: whether Mamdani’s allies are merely making their mark in New York’s House primaries, or whether the results are the beginning of a larger realignment for the Democratic Party heading toward 2028.

So basically everyone just wants to claim they’re the future of the Democrats? Cool cool.
Wait, I thought this article was saying Mamdani DID win the House primaries or something. Like, how many people does one guy have backing him? Sounds like AOC is the nominee already tho, right?
I don’t get the leap they’re talking about. Primaries in NYC aren’t the whole party, but also of course it’s “the future” because Twitter is loud. Chris Cillizza saying AOC in 2028 like it’s guaranteed is wild. Bakari Sellers rebutting it… ok but isn’t that still a sign the left is getting stronger? My head hurts.
All these names and coalitions and hashtags… at the end of the day it’s like: if they win local primaries then everyone panic says “too far left” or “face of the party” 🙄. Also Mamdani sounds like he’s from another party or something to me? Not sure why people are acting like this proves who’ll win national elections in 2028. Primaries don’t translate like that. Unless they do? Idk.
