Selena Gomez is set to step into a new cinematic pairing with Cate Blanchett. The 33-year-old Emmy-nominated actress has been cast opposite the 57-year-old Oscar-winning star in filmmaker Brady Corbet’s upcoming movie, with the film also slated to star Michael Fassbender.
Blanchett brought the collaboration into focus at a masterclass during the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend, where she discussed working with Corbet “soon.” The casting news had already been previewed earlier through InSneider’s reveal about Gomez’s role in the project.
Even with details still scarce, Corbet has shared enough breadcrumbs to suggest a particular tone and ambition.. He said he wanted to make an “x-rated” movie set in the 1970s. and described the larger sweep as a story “spans from the 19th century into the present day. ” while being “predominantly focused on the ’70s.” Corbet also characterized it as “really. really genre-defying. ” explaining that he sees it as moving across periods rather than staying locked to one era.
The production plans sound equally specific.. The movie is reportedly being shot on very rare eight-perf 65mm cameras.. At the Dublin Storyhouse screenwriting festival last month. Corbet also said he’s building a lengthy script. describing the film as clocking in at 200 pages.. That’s a notable jump from his last film. The Brutalist. which was 165 pages and ran three and a half hours.
Corbet has framed the project’s subject as rooted in belief systems and American history.. “My new film is a film that is sort of about American mysticism and the history of the occult in America. ” he said. adding that he’s been reading about “the migration of the cultist belief systems and structures.” He also said he’s started working with an occultist historian of America named Mitch Horowitz.
A consistent thread runs through Corbet’s own descriptions: he’s weaving an “x-rated” story focused largely on the ’70s. but structured as something that “spans from the 19th century into the present day. ” and he’s tying that span to research on “American mysticism” and “the history of the occult in America. ” including the “migration of the cultist belief systems and structures.”
For Gomez, the casting lands amid a busy schedule. She recently wrapped filming on the upcoming Wizards Beyond Waverly Place four-part finale event, where she’s set to make her directorial debut.
