Selena Gomez clarifies “lol” after Taylor NBA Finals photo

Selena Gomez has stepped in after fans misread a “lol” comment she left under Taylor Swift’s Game 4 courtside photo during the 2026 NBA Finals. Late Thursday night, she said the remark wasn’t meant as shade and that it was tied to the first image in the post.
Selena Gomez woke up to a flood of texts—and with them, a fresh wave of online confusion.
The chatter began after Gomez left a cryptic “lol” in the comments beneath a photo of Taylor Swift sitting courtside at Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals featuring the San Antonio Spurs vs. the New York Knicks. The post was shared on the MTV Instagram account and included two moments from the arena: one photo showed Swift alongside longtime fan Mariska Hargitay. with Hargitay looking exhausted as she leaned against Taylor. while the second photo captured the two jumping in the air and cheering.
A screenshot of Gomez’s “lol” comment quickly circulated in a way that made it seem like she was reacting to the second image—the one filled with joy. That’s where some fans started to wonder if it was a not-so-subtle jab at Swift, especially after the comment was interpreted as coming off “shady.”
Late Thursday night, Gomez addressed the controversy through an Instagram Story, writing, “Woke up and was sent so many texts. I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult.” She added that the “comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page.”
According to her explanation, the “first slide” was the photo showing Mariska Hargitay looking exhausted as Swift hugged her.
Gomez then expanded her point with a reference to a broader conversation tied to the game: “Second I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends. Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise. also .. It’s a basketball game,” she concluded.
The post’s misread quickly gained traction because there was another screenshot in the mix—one Gomez says she’s referring to when she mentions the “text chain.” That image showed Gomez posting a screenshot of an article that included the words. “Mad respect for the game!!. Congrats to the peeps that represent!. What a come back. ” followed by. “so funny how some are all sudden fans though lol.” The screenshot circulated online as fans connected it to the idea that Gomez might be targeting Swift and Hailey Bieber. who were both believed to be in attendance at the game.
Gomez’s Story also referenced the same thread of speculation: “The other screenshot Selena mentions, referring to a text chain, also appeared online, though she appeared to delete it relatively quickly.”
With fans tying together the MTV comment screenshot, the earlier text-chain image, and the timing around Swift’s NBA Finals appearance, Gomez’s latest clarification was an attempt to reset the story—insisting her “lol” wasn’t an insult and that it was tied to the first photo, not the second.
