Seattle airport unveils Concourse C just before World Cup

Seattle airport – Seattle-Tacoma International Airport removed the “Upgrades in Progress” signs early Thursday and opened its expanded Concourse C in time to welcome soccer fans arriving for locally hosted World Cup matches starting June 15 through July 6.
When the “Upgrades in Progress” signs came down early Thursday morning along Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s Concourse C, it didn’t just mark a construction milestone. It cleared the path for the first wave of soccer fans landing in Seattle as the locally hosted World Cup games begin.
The matches kick off on June 15 and run through July 6, and the timing made the opening feel less like a ribbon-cutting moment and more like a door finally opening on a new airport experience.
During the ceremony. SEA’s managing director Wendy Reiter described the challenge Seattle faced as an airport that can’t easily spread out. “SEA is one of the most space-constrained airports in the country,” Reiter said. “We couldn’t go out, so we had to go up. Using the same footprint, and not losing any gates, we’ve created more comfort and utility for our travelers.”.
What the airport unveiled is the updated Concourse C project: a $399 million expansion that adds 145. 000 square feet and brings a 30-foot-tall ceiling and much more room for both passengers and visitors. The upgrade adds four floors where there was once just one. alongside close to a dozen new restaurants and retail spots—many of them local—plus six retail kiosks showcasing the wares of small and emerging businesses in the region.
Concourse C sits between the C and D concourses. and it is accessible to all passengers and visitor’s pass holders once they pass through security. The renovation also brings additions to SEA’s art collection. plus spaces designed for everyday needs: a sensory room. a nursing room. and meditation and prayer rooms.
For many travelers. the most visible change may be what the airport calls its first outdoor viewing space: a covered outdoor observation patio. In the center of the concourse. a massive tree-like structure—named “Tree at C”—creates a canopy over tiered. auditorium-style bench seating. The seating is dotted with tables with power ports and artwork. turning what used to be a corridor into an area that invites people to linger.
Alaska Airlines is also preparing a major addition of its own, planning to open a massive, two-story lounge in Concourse C. That expansion is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2027, after this opening.
Behind the scenes, the Concourse C upgrade took dozens of teams and hundreds of workers, including the design team of The Miller Hull Partnership and Woods Bagot, and Turner Construction.
The airport says the “Upgrades in Progress” signage had been up for about three years. shielding travelers from the larger renovation project. By Thursday morning. the shield was gone—just in time for a season when terminals across the United States feel every extra passenger step. every extra bag. and every extra minute.

So they took the signs down early like it’s a theme park now?
Wait world cup fans are landing June 15? That’s crazy timing. I figured they’d keep those “upgrades in progress” signs forever lol.
This sounds nice but $399 million seems like a lot to just open a hallway. Also isn’t Concourse C already there? Like they added floors but still it’s the same footprint so where did the money go??
Ngl I don’t get why they needed soccer to open it like that. Feels like they’re rushing for the cameras. Also “sensory room” and nursing stuff is great but I’m wondering if the rest of the airport still feels chaotic after security… because usually it’s a zoo. Hopefully the new restaurants aren’t just overpriced Seattle stuff.
