Maybe Sean McVay took some truth serum on that long flight home, maybe a win is just the right time to come clean.
But the Los Angeles Rams’ typically brilliant head coach punctuated his news conference following Monday night’s 28-6 trouncing of the New York Giants with an admission about his team’s Week 1 faceplant in Australia.
“Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. And, you know, sometimes you have a dumba– coach that, you know, makes travel plans that puts you in bad spots,” said McVay, slapping the lectern on his way out of the media room as reporters cackled while he exited.
“There you go.”
Hard to know whether McVay was really falling on his sword and trying to bury a narrative about the Rams’ disastrous travel strategy for their Week 1 game in Melbourne, Australia. But their approach of bracketing 15-hour flights just before and after the game in a bid to keep the Rams operating on Pacific Coast time resulted in an embarrassing 27-7 defeat to the archrival San Francisco 49ers, who opted to spend the week Down Under while acclimating their bodies ahead of the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game on the continent.
“I don’t believe that that’s why we didn’t play well enough,” McVay said after the loss in Melbourne. “I really don’t.
“I’ll always make decisions that I think are best for the football team. It’s easy in hindsight to be able to say it was a miss, but those are responsibilities that I’ll take.”
He certainly seemed to 11 days after the fact.
