Seahawks QB Sam Darnold credits 49ers turnaround

Sam Darnold says a stint with the San Francisco 49ers helped spark the improvement that later carried him to Super Bowl glory with the Seattle Seahawks and a 14-3 season with the Minnesota Vikings.
Sam Darnold knows exactly how quickly football can flip.
Just three years ago, he was widely treated as a first-round pick gone wrong—something closer to a cautionary tale than a quarterback with a long runway. Now, he’s a Super Bowl champion, helping lead the Seattle Seahawks to their first Super Bowl in over ten years.
Darnold doesn’t frame his comeback as luck. When asked where the turning point of his career came from, the Seattle quarterback pointed to the one place most people associate with quarterback development—his time with the San Francisco 49ers.
“I think going to San Francisco — I mean, shoot, you guys saw what Mac Jones did this year,” Darnold said. “I understood that quarterbacks in that system, quarterbacks with Kyle — you look at Brock and all the success he’s had there — quarterbacks just thrive in that system.”
In San Francisco, the system Darnold references didn’t just produce one story—it stacked them. The 49ers’ quarterback-friendly reputation has been built across multiple seasons and multiple names. Darnold’s path comes after the success of Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy. with Mac Jones also cited for what happened “this year.” Most recently. it’s been Darnold himself adding another chapter to the list.
And the irony for Seattle—and the reason the 49ers’ quarterback room matters so much in this story—is that the division rivals didn’t just get a quarterback-ready turnaround. They helped create it.
After leaving the 49ers, Darnold first joined the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. He found success immediately under another QB-friendly system, and the results showed: Minnesota finished 14-3 in the NFC North. But the season ended sooner than anyone wanted. The Vikings were eliminated in the first round, and doubts followed after the team’s struggles.
Darnold answered those doubts fast once he landed with Seattle. With the Seahawks, he led one of the best offenses in the league while also minimizing his mistakes on the way to the Super Bowl.
Between the Jets-era skepticism. the 49ers’ quarterback development. and the bounce back that came after a first-round exit in Minnesota. the timeline reads like a career that kept finding the next door just as the last one closed. By the time the Seahawks’ Super Bowl run concluded. Darnold wasn’t trying to prove a point anymore—he’d already lived it. and Seattle had the trophy to show for it.
