Scott Hastings dies at 61 after cancer complications

Scotland and British & Irish Lions centre Scott Hastings has died aged 61, after complications linked to a four-year battle with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His death came on the day of his late wife Jenny’s birthday, weeks after she vanished while swimming at Wardi

Scott Hastings passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday 17 May at the age of 61, with his family around him, after complications from a four-year cancer battle. The timing struck hardest for those closest to him: it was also the birthday of his late wife, Jenny.

Hastings’s children released a statement on behalf of the family. saying. “Corey and Kerry-Anne Hastings are saddened to inform you that Scott. the Scotland and British & Irish Lions centre. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on the morning of Sunday 17 May.” The statement added that the date coincided with Jenny’s birthday. and that “he is safe and with his beloved Jenny.” It continued: “Scott was undergoing cancer treatment and due to complications deteriorated extremely quickly.”

The statement said his final moments came despite “every effort by the incredible team at the Western General Hospital ICU.” It added that he died “peacefully and pain free.” At this time. the family asked for privacy “to process and manage their energies. ” asking for space as they deal with their grief.

Hastings had been treated for Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer that affects white blood cells. His death followed a long period of public and private struggle within the family, shaped by what Jenny endured and what she ultimately decided in 2024.

Jenny vanished while swimming in 2024 at Wardie Bay in Edinburgh after a two-decade struggle with mental health.. Her disappearance triggered an intense search. and she was classed as a “high risk missing person” because of known mental health challenges.. Her family later said she had “struggled with her mental health for a number of years and ultimately she was unable to cope on this occasion.” Jenny’s body was discovered on September 7. 2024. the couple’s wedding anniversary.

In a separate emotional statement released the day after Jenny vanished. her family described how she “swam out into the Firth of Forth from Wardie Bay in Edinburgh” and said it appeared she “wished to end her suffering in what was a regular and healing place for her.” The statement also recorded the contrast between Jenny “loved the water” and the reality that “her mind was not in a place of safety.”

Scott Hastings had spoken about returning to Wardie Bay after Jenny’s death.. He said that when she was well. she “was radiant and beautiful and outgoing. ” while “to see somebody suffer poor mental health was a challenge.” He added that he and Jenny spent 45 years together. and that visiting the bay had become a place for him to find solace.

On the rugby field, Scott Hastings was a defining figure in Scotland’s era of achievement.. He was a member of Scotland’s famous Grand Slam-winning team of 1990 alongside his older brother Gavin.. Scottish Rugby later noted that he was the most-capped male centre for Scotland of all time and won the Grand Slam with Scotland in 1990. anchoring a victory against England.

Scott Hastings won 65 caps for Scotland over 11 years, and represented the British & Irish Lions on 12 occasions on two tours.. Scottish Rugby’s statement also said he played 13 games for the Barbarians. was a proud Watsonian. and wore the Edinburgh jersey “with such distinction.” It added: “But those stellar stats tell far from the whole story.”

Gregor Townsend. Scotland head coach. described Hastings as “an iconic figure for Scottish rugby” in the late 1980s and early 1990s.. Townsend said Hastings’s defensive display in the 1990 Grand Slam victory over England was “crucial. ” adding that Hastings “epitomised what it meant to play for Scotland – combining passion. confidence and aggression. whenever he wore the navy blue jersey.”

Former Lions and Scotland head coach Sir Ian McGeechan praised the partnership between Hastings and his brother Gavin. describing their arrival into the Scotland set-up as “always special. ” and saying. “We came in together and we grew together.” McGeechan remembered Hastings on the Lions tours. saying he took “an absolute lead” and was “so single-minded and determined about winning. ” with a “right-hand man” role on the field.. He also recalled the Grand Slam game against England in 1990. noting that while Jerry Guscott was on the England team. “Scott gave nothing away to him whatsoever.” McGeechan summed up his impact with the line: “Whatever jersey Scott wore. he just made it better.”

Kenny Logan, another former international team-mate who worked closely with Hastings when the Doddie Foundation was established, also paid tribute.. The statement said Logan worked with Hastings when he was chair of the Doddie Foundation. and that “Scott’s role wasn’t just about generating PR.” Logan said: “Scott was one of those guys who you could rely on to always put his hand up.. His energy was incredible.”

Scott Hastings was inducted to the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame last October. Scottish Rugby said a tribute will be paid at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium, where “the flag will fly at half-mast” in his honour.

The timing of Hastings’s death brought together two different battles that have defined the family’s recent years: Jenny’s disappearance in 2024. her body being found on September 7. and her birthday falling on Sunday 17 May. the same day Scott deteriorated rapidly during cancer treatment after complications.. In the statement from his children. those events are linked directly through the words about complications. the hospital ICU effort. and the emphasis that he was “safe and with his beloved Jenny.”

Funeral arrangements and further details have not been provided in the released statements, and the family asked for privacy as they “process and manage their energies.”
