Scott Eastwood is opening up about a lesson his father, Clint Eastwood, reportedly taught Kevin Costner while the two filmed together.
During the Aug. 3 episode of “Armchair Expert,” the “Longest Ride” actor, 40, recounted what he called a “legendary story” from the set of 1993’s “A Perfect World,” which the 96-year-old Hollywood veteran directed and costarred in with Costner.
“I’m sort of going to paraphrase it, and I’ll probably tell it a little wrong. But Kevin Costner – sort of going through, maybe, the Kevin Costner rise to fame – … maybe got a big ego,” Scott told host Dax Shepard. “They were doing ‘A Perfect World.’ And they’re both starring in this movie. My dad is directing it. And apparently, Kevin wouldn’t come out of his trailer for some reason.”
Costner was scheduled to appear in the scene being filmed, Eastwood said, but when the director learned that Costner was still in his trailer, Scott Eastwood said his father told his crew, “Well, send him home then.”
USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Costner for comment.
When Costner received the news, Scott Eastwood said he couldn’t believe it. “[Costner] said, ‘What do you mean? I’m in the scene.’ [And the crew said], ‘Well, I guess you’re not anymore. Clint changed that,'” Eastwood recalled, adding, “And so I think the next day he was on set ready to go.”
Eastwood, the youngest son of the famed actor and director, said the incident shaped his own approach to filmmaking. His dad “didn’t do trailers and things,” preferring to remain on set and focused on the work at hand.
“He always told me, too, as a kid, ‘You want to learn how to make movies? You want to learn how to do this? You stay here with everybody else, and you make the damn movie,'” Eastwood said.
In “A Perfect World,” Costner plays an escaped convict who takes a young boy hostage, while Clint Eastwood portrays the Texas Ranger who sets out to bring him to justice. Laura Dern, Linda Hart and Bradley Whitford also star.
Scott Eastwood recalls Shia LaBeouf clash on ‘Fury’ set
Scott Eastwood knows a thing or two about on-set drama, having experienced a dispute of his own while filming. In the same interview, he described a confrontation with Shia LaBeouf during the 2014 war drama “Fury,” saying that a disagreement over a scripted moment escalated before Brad Pitt stepped in to defuse it.
“Brad Pitt sort of broke up a tense moment,” Eastwood recalled, explaining it went down when LaBeouf “was having an episode” and “thought that I shouldn’t be spitting tobacco” on a tank, even though it “was in the script.”
Eastwood, who said he had been trying to “keep clear” of the “tormented” actor on set, remembered cursing out LaBeouf. The dustup occurred about midway through production, and Eastwood said it wasn’t an anomaly.
“Everyone had moments with Shia that were, I think at one point, going to come to blows or not,” he said. “It’s funny, the film industry, it attracts psychopaths.”
