FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The moment John McGinn got a touch, it felt like Scotland finally snapped the long wait. In the 28th minute, he deflected a shot off an opposing defender and sent it past goalkeeper Johny Placide to give Scotland a 1-0 lead over Haiti in Group C on Saturday.
Scotland didn’t just win. It ended a drought that stretches back 28 years. The result was Scotland’s first appearance in the tournament since 1998, and it delivered their first World Cup victory since 1990, when they beat Sweden 2-1.
There was even more relief in the timing. Brazil and Morocco had played to a 1-1 draw earlier in the day. placing Scotland at the top of the group standings. For a squad that carried the weight of history on its shoulders. the scoreline brought something immediate and tangible: position. momentum. and belief.
The goal itself had the look of football’s fine margins. McGinn’s strike came off a rebound from Che Adams’ miss in the box. The ball bounced off Placide, rolled into open space, and then the shot from 13 yards out ricocheted off a defender before finding the way in.
Scotland’s Tartan Army made sure the atmosphere matched the occasion. Supporters filled Gillette Stadium—about 30 miles outside Boston—with a sea of red that moved like a wave behind the goal.
Scotland came close again in the 17th minute, when captain Scott McTominay broke free and fired a shot that clipped the top of the post, a warning that Haiti would have to defend for the full 90.
But Haiti grew louder as the match wore on. In the second half, they pressed for openings and created the most serious chances late. In the 74th minute. Ruben Providence swung a cross in for Wilson Isidor. only for the forward to come up empty on his attempt to direct the ball in. Then in the 84th. Frantzdy Pierrot’s header went wide of the left side as the clock ticked toward a comeback.
By the time the final whistle came, Haiti were still searching for their first World Cup point. This was another step in their long World Cup story—Haiti’s only other appearance came in West Germany in 1974.
Scotland stays in town next, with Morocco visiting Gillette Stadium on Friday. Haiti will turn to its next challenge against Brazil on Friday in Philadelphia, still looking for the breakthrough that would change the feel of their tournament.
