Schwarber and Stewart demolish rivals as homers explode

NEW YORK — The damage arrived early, and Cincinnati didn’t let up.
Sal Stewart tied a career high with six RBIs as the Reds pulled away for a rout of New York. The rookie put Cincinnati in front with a two-run double in the third off Will Warren (7-2). He then added a sacrifice fly during a four-run fifth inning that came after a fielding error by first baseman Ben Rice.
Stewart finished with the kind of finish that makes scoreboards feel merciless: a bases-clearing double in the eighth that expanded the Reds’ lead to 9-1. He also drove in six on April 15 against the San Francisco Giants.
Spencer Steer capped the slugfest with a three-run homer in the fifth as Cincinnati won for the sixth time in 17 games without Elly De La Cruz. De La Cruz began a minor league rehab assignment on Friday. Rookie Edwin Arroyo had four hits and reached base five times, and Cincinnati ended with 15 hits.
Andrew Abbott (4-5) kept the Yankees in check, allowing one run and five hits in five-plus innings.
PHILADELPHIA — If New York couldn’t find answers in Cincinnati, the Mets didn’t have them either in Philadelphia.
Kyle Schwarber homered three times, including twice in Philadelphia’s eight-run third inning, and Bryce Harper hit for the cycle as the Phillies routed the Mets 15-3 on Saturday night.
Schwarber led off the third inning with a 456-foot home run to the second deck in right field off Mets starter Freddy Peralta (5-6). He then capped the inning with a 457-foot drive to almost the same spot off Cionel Perez.
The night stayed explosive in the seventh, when Schwarber added a two-run homer and pushed his major league-leading total to 28. That shot came off Tobias Myers. It was the fifth career three-homer game for Schwarber. who went 4 for 5 with six RBIs and four runs scored in a season-high offensive output for the Phillies.
Cristopher Sánchez (9-3) allowed one earned run in six innings, lowering his ERA to 1.80. At Citizens Bank Park. it was his 23rd straight start in which he allowed two earned runs or fewer. the second-most such starts by a pitcher at that ballpark in MLB history since 1913. trailing only Jacob deGrom’s 24 at Citi Field for the Mets from Sept. 9, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2022.
Schwarber became the 67th player in major league history to do so. and the second this season with multiple home runs in an inning. joining Houston’s Yordan Alvarez on June 12. He’s also the fourth Phillies player to hit two home runs in an inning: Trea Turner (Aug. 19, 2023), Von Hayes (June 11, 1985), Andy Seminick (June 2, 1949).
Harper jump-started the Phillies with a solo home run in the first inning—his 16th of the year. He doubled and singled in the third, then hit a two-run triple to the gap in left-center field in the fifth for his first career cycle and the 11th in Phillies history.
But the Mets’ pitching couldn’t keep up. Peralta allowed 10 hits and a career-worst 10 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings, and his ERA climbed from 3.90 to 4.83.
DETROIT — The Tigers kept it moving late and turned the game into a statement.
Troy Melton allowed one hit in six innings, and Detroit’s offense came alive in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Dillon Dingler had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs as Detroit won its second straight game after losing four of five.
Melton (4-0) gave up a homer to Sam Antonacci on his second pitch of the game, but then settled in. He allowed only four more baserunners—on three walks and a hit batter. He struck out five and allowed two or fewer runs for the fourth time in five starts.
Kenley Jansen finished with the ninth-for ninth save as Detroit closed it out.
CHICAGO — Chicago had the lead, but Toronto didn’t fold.
Kazuma Okamoto hit a three-run home run to cap a five-run eighth inning and Toronto rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Chicago. Daulton Varsho returned from the 10-day injured list and added a three-run shot as the Blue Jays won for the fourth time in five games.
Matt Shaw and Pete Crow-Armstrong homered for the Cubs, who led 5-0 in the late innings and missed a chance to win their third straight.
Chicago’s Jacob Webb (1-2) came on with two on in the eighth and gave up consecutive RBI singles to Alejandro Kirk and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to tie the game at 5-all. Okamoto then sent his 16th homer of the season deep into the left-field bleachers to give Toronto the lead for good.
Jeff Hoffman (5-4) threw one inning of relief, and Louis Varland got the final six outs for his 15th save.
ATLANTA — Atlanta found its way to the end of the night, and then swung again.
Ozzie Albies hit two homers, including a walk-off, two-run blast in the ninth inning, to give Atlanta a come-from-behind win over Milwaukee.
After Matt Olson singled off Aaron Ashby (10-1) with one out, Albies delivered the decisive shot over the right field wall for his 12th home run of the season.
Ashby’s bid for his first save of the season slipped. He failed to protect a 3-2 lead and took his first loss after going 10-0 to start MLB-leading with 10 wins. Dylan Lee (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth as Atlanta’s fourth pitcher.
Ashby’s blown save wasted a strong start from left-hander Kyle Harrison, who allowed only four hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Dylan Crews made the ninth inning count, and Washington answered with just enough.
Crews homered in the ninth and C.J. Abrams added a solo homer as Washington beat Tampa Bay. The Nationals look to win a franchise record-tying sixth consecutive road series when the teams finish off the three-game set Sunday.
Mitchell Parker (3-3) worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Brad Lord threw three shutout innings. Clayton Beeter finished for his fifth save, striking out Ben Williamson with the tying run on second base to end it.
Ian Seymor (3-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits. Tampa Bay lost at home for the 10th time in 35 games.
Washington starter Cade Cavalli was scratched from the lineup the previous day due to illness. He labored through 2 2/3 innings anyway, and despite loading the bases in each of the first two innings and allowing six hits, limited the damage to two runs.
ARLINGTON, Texas — Manny Machado turned a late rally into a finishing swing.
San Diego beat Texas 6-4 in 10 innings when Machado hit a three-run homer in the 10th, his 13th this season, tying his season high of five RBIs.
The Padres still had a chance to win their seventh consecutive series against the Rangers after their 16th victory in the past 19 games against Texas. San Diego came back from a 3-1 deficit in the eighth a day after losing the series opener 9-7 despite scoring five runs in the top of the first.
Machado drove in a run with an RBI double in the third. In the eighth, his run-scoring groundout pulled the Padres within 3-2 before Jackson Merrill’s tying single.
Jake Burger’s two-run homer gave Texas a 3-1 lead in the seventh after consecutive doubles from Josh Jung and Wyatt Langford an inning earlier.
In the 10th, Joe Ross (0-1), the sixth Texas pitcher, walked Samad Taylor while the speedy No. 2 hitter was trying to bunt for the third time in the game. Machado then lined a 2-0 sinker into the left field seats near the San Diego bullpen.
Adrian Morejon (6-1) struck out five in two scoreless innings, and Mason Miller earned his 20th save in 20 chances despite Langford’s RBI infield single in the 10th. Miller struck out two as the Rangers fanned a season-high 17 times.
MIAMI — Max Meyer stayed steady, and Miami kept rolling at home.
Meyer allowed two runs in five innings to win his eighth consecutive decision to start the season, and Heriberto Hernández homered as Miami beat San Francisco for its seventh straight victory at home.
Jakob Marsee doubled and singled for the Marlins, who are 13-4 in June and improved to 39-38 to move above .500 for the first time since April 13, when they were 9-8.
Meyer (8-0) labored through his outing, allowing seven hits, striking out seven and walking two. He completed a perfect fifth to surpass Dontrelle Willis in franchise history to start the season with eight straight wins. Willis won his first seven decisions in 2005.
Casey Schmitt doubled twice and homered for the Giants, who stranded nine runners.
HOUSTON — The Guardians found their match, and Travis Bazzana delivered it.
Rookie Travis Bazzana set career highs with four hits, two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored, and Cleveland beat Houston.
Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run homer in the third to break a 1-1 tie and added an RBI single in the seventh.
Bazzana took Spencer Arrighetti deep on the first pitch of the game for his second leadoff homer, singled in the third and then hit a three-run homer off Arrighetti in the fifth. He added an RBI single in the seventh.
The first overall pick in the 2024 draft, who made his Major League debut April 28, is the second Guardians’ rookie to record a four-hit game and a two-homer game this season. Chase DeLauter hit two home runs at Seattle on March 26 and had four hits against the Athletics on May 1.
Patrick Bailey added three hits and two runs scored for the Guardians.
Taken together, the night felt built around separation: Stewart and Harper/Schwarber opened their games with damage, Toronto erased a big hole in the eighth, and Machado’s 10th-inning swing turned a tight finish into a final punch.
