Scavengers Reign Leaves Netflix May 31, Fans Furious

Scavengers Reign, the gorgeously animated sci-fi series about survivors on the planet Vesta, leaves Netflix on May 31. Created for HBO Max after starting as a dialogue-light animated short, the show earned major acclaim—including a perfect 100% score on Rotten

By the time May 31 arrives, Scavengers Reign won’t be waiting on Netflix anymore. For fans who discovered it for its breathtaking animation and stayed for the creeping horror of life on the alien planet Vesta. that’s the kind of disappearing act that stings—especially for a series that. despite its short run. built a small but dedicated following.

The journey to this Netflix exit started well before the streamer picked it up. Scavengers Reign was originally created for HBO Max. Before it became an animated series. creators Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner developed it first as an animated short that drew attention for its gorgeous animation and a notable lack of dialogue. HBO Max then picked it up as a series. and over its run it gathered the kind of fanbase that doesn’t fade quickly.

That run was only one season.

Scavengers Reign is set on Vesta. where a crew of survivors crash-landed and has to keep moving even when the planet itself feels hostile. The visuals are lush—vibrant vegetation, storm-swept skies, and landscapes that look almost inviting at first. Then the danger shows up fast. Storms rain down razor-sharp diamonds. strange creatures lurk in the forests. and some of those beasts infect victims’ minds with telepathic visions. Even the vegetation isn’t safe, turning beauty into something unsettling.

The animation is handled by Titmouse Animation, the studio behind The Legend of Vox Machina and Star Trek: Lower Decks. In Scavengers Reign, the mix of stunning craft and creeping threat helps sell a world that’s alive in every sense of the word.

The voice cast brings the crew and their nightmare to the front: Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, and Alia Shawkat. Shawkat plays the robot Levi, as well as the wife of crew member Kamen, portrayed by Ted Travelstead. Levi’s arc takes an especially eerie turn as she transforms into an entirely new being during the series. A strange yellow goo infects her, interferes with her programming, and leads her to investigate Vesta’s flora.

Science fiction has long played with the idea of machines gaining sentience. but Scavengers Reign leans into it with its own unsettling path—one that keeps the question of what’s “alive” constantly shifting. The result is a series that feels both precise and unpredictable. the kind that leaves viewers talking long after the credits.

When Scavengers Reign premiered. it landed with strong critical reception—praised for its unique animation style. breathtaking yet disturbing visuals. and compelling story. It also earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. That kind of acclaim is exactly what made the cancellation after a single season harder to swallow for the fans who had connected with it.

Still, Netflix later picked up the rights to broadcast Scavengers Reign, giving viewers another chance to catch up and pushing hope that more episodes could follow. In the meantime, the show was still what it always had been: an inventive, atmospheric sci-fi experience built to linger.

Joe Bennett said there were no plans for a second season. But he also struck a different note—one that sounded like a door left slightly open. “There is more story to be told…we are ready to make another season.”

Even as it leaves Netflix, Scavengers Reign won’t vanish completely. It will still be available to stream on HBO Max. For now, that’s where the series’ future lives: with its audience carrying the momentum, and with the idea—if not the certainty—of more story still on the table.
