Savannah Bananas reveal how ticket lottery winners are selected as more than FOUR MILLION fans sit on waitlist to watch viral team

The Savannah Bananas have pulled back the curtain on how they select ticket lottery winners, revealing the inner workings behind the most sought-after seats in sports.

With more than four million fans currently sitting on the team’s massive ticket waitlist, demand can outstrip stadium capacity by as much as 20-to-1 in many tour cities.

Now, Steven Wilde, the team’s Head of Ticket Experience, has revealed the data science and algorithmic vetting operating behind the viral baseball team.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Wilde addressed fan skepticism head-on, insisting the process is far from a manufactured marketing stunt.

‘There’s nothing where we’re putting our thumb on anything to kind of influence who is selected,’ Wilde explained.

The draw itself is handled entirely by a computer algorithm, but the organization takes extensive measures before the selection even happens to weed out bad actors.

Third-party verification software scans entry lists for burner emails, duplicate accounts, and automated bot networks.

If a ticket scalper sets up dozens of fake profiles to juice their odds, the system flags and scrubs them before names are drawn.

Once entries are verified, the front office faces an inventory challenge comparable to an airline overbooking flights.

Because not every lottery winner completes a purchase, the Bananas closely track conversion rates and average ticket quantities per transaction to calculate how many buying links to send out without exceeding capacity.

When lucky winners finally receive their window, they are often directed to select broader ‘ticket zones’ – like an outfield section or lower bowl – rather than picking individual seats off a 3D stadium chart.

Wilde explained that the simplified process is intentional, noting that ‘choices are a tax’ that causes decision paralysis and slows down checkouts.

Purchasing opportunities are also released in staggered waves through Fans First Tickets, the organization’s proprietary, in-house ticketing platform acquired to bypass third-party vendor fees and maintain total control over the fan experience.

Founded in 2016 by owner Jesse Cole, the Georgia-based franchise began as a collegiate summer league team before transforming into a full-time touring exhibition phenomenon often dubbed baseball’s answer to the Harlem Globetrotters.

Ditching traditional rules, the team plays their own fast-paced brand of the sport known as ‘Banana Ball,’ which features a strict two-hour time limit, no bunting, batters being allowed to steal first base, and foul balls caught by spectators counting as official outs.

Beyond the unique rulebook, games are packed with non-stop entertainment, including choreographed in-game dance routines, players batting on stilts, trick-play pitching, and Cole roaming the stadium in his trademark bright yellow tuxedo.

The high-energy spectacle has fueled an explosion on social media and turned the Bananas into one of the biggest draws in sports, regularly packing out Major League Baseball stadiums and selling out multi-city tours coast to coast.
