Sapphire Preferred edges Venture Rewards in $95 face-off

Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture Rewards both charge a $95 annual fee and target travelers new to points. But with a 100,000-point welcome offer, stronger travel protections, and higher earning in more everyday categories, Sapphire Preferred co

When it comes to premium travel credit cards, the annual fee is often the first wall people hit. Both the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card charge $95 a year—an amount that sounds manageable. but only if the rewards and protections actually show up when you need them.

In a showdown where both cards line up on the basics, the differences start to matter: welcome bonuses, how you earn in everyday spending, and what happens if a trip derails.

The common ground is clear. Chase Sapphire Preferred and Capital One Venture Rewards both recommend a credit score of 670 or higher, and both sit in the same entry-level annual-fee bracket at $95. Each also offers a welcome boost for new cardholders—though the numbers don’t match.

Chase currently offers 100,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. The Venture Rewards counters with 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

On value, the gap widens. The Points Guy’s July 2026 valuations place Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2.05 cents each. meaning the Sapphire Preferred welcome offer is worth $2. 050—described as the highest offer seen in the card’s history. Capital One miles are valued at 1.85 cents each. making the Venture Rewards welcome offer worth up to $1. 388 if miles are transferred to Capital One’s airline and hotel transfer partners.

The welcome offer alone pushes the outcome toward Chase.

Beyond the bonus, the benefits package shows why many travelers feel the Sapphire Preferred is built for the moments that go wrong. Both cards include a $120 statement credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or Nexus application fees every four years.

They also overlap on certain conveniences: both cards charge no foreign transaction fees and include extended warranty protection.

But then the travel protections diverge sharply.

Capital One’s Venture Rewards offers travel benefits including secondary rental car insurance and travel accident insurance. along with baggage-related coverage such as lost luggage insurance and baggage delay insurance. It also includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance and trip delay reimbursement.

Chase’s Sapphire Preferred covers similar categories, but with heavier protections in the trip-delay and cancellation pieces. It offers up to $500 per covered traveler in trip delay reimbursement if you’re delayed more than 12 hours or overnight. up to $10. 000 in trip cancellation and interruption insurance per person (up to $20. 000 per trip). and up to $100 per day for up to five days in baggage delay reimbursement if your bag is delayed more than six hours.

There’s also a major distinction in rental car coverage. The Sapphire Preferred includes primary auto rental coverage. while the Venture Rewards lists auto rental collision damage waiver* coverage as secondary. and *benefits are only available to accounts approved for the World Elite Mastercard. Terms apply.

Chase’s lineup doesn’t stop there. The Sapphire Preferred also includes emergency evacuation and transportation coverage, lost luggage insurance, and travel and emergency assistance services. It lists trip cancellation and interruption insurance as well.

For travelers thinking in dollars first, Chase also has a built-in fee offset. The Sapphire Preferred offers a $100 annual hotel credit on hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel, which “completely offsets” the card’s $95 annual fee.

It also stacks in extras that frequent users may actually use. Cardholders get a one-year complimentary Apple TV subscription (activate by Dec. 31), a complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership valued at $120 each year through Dec. 31, 2027 (activation required), and a $10 DoorDash promo each month for nonrestaurant orders (alcohol orders may be exempt; through Dec. 31, 2027).

The Venture Rewards’ appeal is simpler, and it’s built around that ease: no foreign transaction fees, extended warranty protection, and the travel and airport-friendly Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit.

Then there’s how you earn.

Both cards define travel broadly, but the Sapphire Preferred uses a more layered approach that can reach into everyday spending. With the Venture Rewards. you earn 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels. vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar spent on all other purchases.

With the Sapphire Preferred. you earn 5 points per dollar spent on all travel purchased through Chase Travel; 3 points per dollar on dining. gas. electric vehicle charging. select streaming services. online grocery purchases (excluding Target. Walmart and wholesale clubs) and vacation homes booked with select brands^; 2 points per dollar on all other travel; and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

Travel is described as including everyday expenses with the Sapphire Preferred—such as tolls, parking and subway tickets. Dining, too, is broad, including standard restaurants, bars and coffee shops, food delivery services and even most vending machines.

That matters because it changes which card feels “worth it” on regular life spending. The Venture Rewards keeps earning easy and straightforward, but the Sapphire Preferred offers elevated categories that can match more of what people actually buy week to week.

When it’s time to redeem, both cards let you redeem rewards in multiple ways, but the best value lives in travel.

For Capital One miles, the card offers fixed-value redemption of 1 cent each toward travel bookings made through Capital One Travel or to offset any recent travel purchase. The text notes that if you redeem for gift cards, cash back or Amazon and PayPal purchases, redemption rates can be subpar.

Chase points come with a path to higher travel value. If you book travel reservations through Chase Travel. you can redeem points at a value of up to 1.75 cents per point. thanks to Points Boost (the exact value varies by redemption; readers are told to check the rewards program agreement for details).

The piece also highlights that transferring rewards can unlock even more. Capital One miles can be transferred to Capital One’s 15-plus airline and hotel transfer partners, most at a 1:1 ratio. Noteworthy partners include Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to Chase’s airline and hotel partners, including United MileagePlus, World of Hyatt and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

Here, one sharp change shows up inside the Chase ecosystem. The transfer ratio for World of Hyatt is dropping from 1:1 to 4:3. For existing cardholders, the change takes effect on Oct. 1, while new cardholders who applied on or after June 15 will see it take effect immediately.

Despite that adjustment, the winner is still leaning toward Sapphire Preferred in the end.

A key detail underscores why: the managing editor for credit cards. Giselle Gomez. transferred 25. 000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and paid $618 in taxes and fees for two adults and one lap infant to fly Air France Economy Comfort from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Miami International Airport (MIA) during Roland Garros. one of Paris’ busiest travel periods.

A final example reinforces that transfer redemptions can be about timing and routes, not just math. The text also describes transferring 15,000 Capital One miles to Air France-KLM Flying Blue to book two one-way domestic Delta Air Lines flights.

Put together, the message lands like a gut-check for anyone deciding between the two: if you want simplicity, Venture Rewards may feel easier; if you want the most value across bonuses, everyday earning categories, and trip protections, Sapphire Preferred is the card that keeps delivering.

So what should a traveler do?

In most cases, the recommendation is to choose the Sapphire Preferred for its higher benefits and earning rates. The Venture Rewards can still complement another cardholder’s wallet. but the piece’s bottom line is direct: either card could work. yet the Sapphire Preferred generally provides more value for most people.

The comparison also comes with standard fine print: for Capital One products listed on the page, some benefits may be provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.
