San Francisco Protesters Spell “EPSTEIN” Ahead of Trump

At twelve noon on a foggy day in San Francisco, the ocean wind did not stop the message from carrying. Nearly 1,000 protesters flooded Ocean Beach and, in careful formation, spelled out the single word “EPSTEIN.”

They did it inside a folder marked “TRUMP. ” then held it aloft as a crowd of participants—many elderly. all ages and backgrounds. strangers turned into a coordinated human banner—made sure the layout could be read from above. At the bottom of the folder. a blue ribbon said “FILES TO TRIALS.” An upside-down American flag—described in the protest material as the now-famous maritime signal of distress—was held up alongside it.

The gesture landed on the eve of Donald Trump’s “gaudy birthday celebration in DC,” a moment the reporting describes as including UFC fighters promoting the kind of machismo and violence associated with the president.

This particular birthday message was timed to a new release of allegations and scrutiny. The week brought an excerpt in The New York Times from Regime Change by Maggie Haverman and Jonathan Swan. The excerpt. as characterized here. focuses on frantic efforts by JD Vance and White House staff to cover up Trump’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein. along with infighting over what should—or should not—be revealed about Trump’s own involvement with the sexual abuse of young girls.

One of the protesters’ key organizers, Brad Newsham, did not frame the banner as just symbolism. After aerial drones finished capturing images from the protest. hundreds of demonstrators walked to the edge of the sea. hugged friends and grateful participants. and gave instructions to a cleanup crew—then spoke about why he keeps doing it.

Newsham. a 74-year-old retired San Francisco taxi driver and published travel writer. explained that he once put his writing on hold in 2006 to join the movement to impeach George Bush over falsehoods carried out in the name of the Iraq War. Frustrated with regular protests. he said he believed demonstrations needed to use art and build more community. though he hadn’t yet figured out how. The turning point came after his daughter taught him about Google Earth, giving him the idea for the human banner.

In 2007, after 11 months of planning, Newsham said he birthed the first human banner protest. Thousands signed up on his Facebook event page, and they flooded the beach to spell out “IMPEACH” with their bodies. The press spread the images around the world. turning what Newsham described as a wild idea into something with impact larger than he expected.

More human banners have followed from Trump’s inauguration up to now. Some spelled out “NO KINGS,” and “FAMILIA.” After Renée Good and Alex Pretti’s deaths in Minneapolis, protesters held a banner reading “IT WAS MURDER/ICE OUT.”

On this Saturday, Newsham said the reason he shows up is blunt: “They’ve been lying to us forever. We want them to know it’s a bunch of rich people running this country, running us into the ground—and we want to put one more chink in the wall here.”

  1. I don’t even know what I’m reading, but an upside down flag is usually a distress signal right? Like what are they trying to “distress” about, Trump? People act like a banner fixes stuff.

  2. They’re saying JD Vance and White House stuff is covering up Epstein ties or whatever, but the article is kinda all over the place. Also “Files to Trials”?? so are they asking for charges or just making art? I feel like this is gonna get spun either way.

  3. Honestly the whole thing sounds staged. Ocean Beach, 1,000 people, drones, “careful formation,” elderly too… like cmon. And they timed it with Trump’s birthday so of course it’s political. But isn’t Epstein stuff old already, like what, they think a human word will subpoena somebody? Also the maritime flag thing is confusing, I thought that was for like ships not presidents.
