Sam Worthington keeps home life “normal” in spotlight

Worthington. 49. is back on our TV screens for the first time in four years in Netflix’s latest Harlan Coben adaptation. I Will Find You. The Australian actor shot to fame as the star of James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar. and his latest role places him opposite the kind of fear and guilt you can’t neatly look past.

But when the day’s filming ends, his life runs on a different rhythm—one he shares with his wife, Lara Bingle, and their three sons.

Worthington is married to Australian model Lara Bingle, who is 38. She has appeared on the covers of leading magazines including Elle Australia and Harper’s Bazaar Australia. and she has fronted campaigns and partnerships with luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton. The couple tied the knot in December 2014. Before that, they first crossed paths in New York City’s Central Park during the Global Citizen Festival in 2013. Then, after building a life in Los Angeles, they moved to New York City in 2022—partly because of the city’s stricter paparazzi laws.

They have three sons: their first son. Rocket Zot. arrived in March 2015. followed by Racer in 2016. and their youngest. River. in 2020. Worthington has previously explained what the names mean. In 2022. he told The Jennifer Hudson Show: “I wanted them to mean something. so Rocket means to ascend; Racer came from a poem about a kid that embraces life. embraces being part of the human race.”.

For River, he added: “Then River, we wanted something a bit more calm, but he’s always a torrent. He’s the worst. He’s the wildest.”

In a world where fame often turns home into a public stage, Lara Bingle has described how she and Worthington try to keep things guarded. “We tend to try to keep our lives as normal as we can. I don’t think about that stuff ever. I don’t make it my reality,” she told Marie Clare Australia.

She also pointed to a family lesson about what’s worth sharing and what isn’t. “My mum instilled in me that it’s important to maintain a little bit of mystery. I think it’s hard in this day and age to achieve. I’ve tried to keep things pretty close to my chest and I think there’s a certain elegance to that.”.

Worthington has been sober for over a decade, and his reflections on the period after Avatar have stayed strikingly plain. Looking back, he told Variety in 2022: “I couldn’t see it. I thought it was normal. I didn’t like who I was. Drinking helped me get through the day.”

In the same interview context. the story shifts to Lara—less as a celebrity companion and more as someone close enough to draw a line. He credits her with helping him tackle his addiction, saying she gave him a firm ultimatum. “You can do what you want. but I don’t need to be around this. ” she told him. a turning point he describes as pushing him toward sobriety.
