Sam Smith is stepping into a new era, and it arrives with a direct hit: a brand-new single. “My Guy” is out now, coming right after Smith announced their fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes.
The album is scheduled for August 21. Smith didn’t just put a date on the calendar—they also framed the record as something deeply personal. built over time and shaped in the studio with their own hands. “I have been writing it for over three years with a very small group of beautiful. dear friends of mine. ” Smith said. adding that Hazel Eyes is “very personal.” Smith also described growing through the process. saying they “deepened myself as an artist” while taking part as a producer and moving through the album’s creation from start to finish.
Romance, in Smith’s words, is the center of it all. They called Hazel Eyes “incredibly romantic,” and said the album documents the life lessons they learned while making it.
Hazel Eyes is described as “a modern fairytale of requited love,” with themes of emotional vulnerability, artistic freedom, and self-reflection. The record was co-produced by Sam Smith, Simon Aldred, and David Odlum.
The full album is a 12-song collection. Much of it was written in New York with collaborators including Feist and Shahzad Ismaily, alongside string arranger Rob Moose. Part of the recording took place at the legendary Electric Lady Studios.
Smith also connected Hazel Eyes to New York itself. calling it “a heartfelt ode to the city of New York which Sam now calls home. ” and pointing to a mix of styles—baroque pop. British folk. outlaw country. and left-field R&B—while keeping their “incandescent voice and soul-baring storytelling” at the front.
On “My Guy. ” Smith said the song is one they felt they’d been waiting a lifetime to write and sing. “Written with beautiful friends on a summer’s day in New York. this one fell out of the sky. ” Smith said. They added that. in a world they described as “sometimes cold and distant. ” they hope listeners feel “the love and the closeness of this recording. ” aiming to capture “the glow and the warmth of love.” Smith also said. “it makes me cry. maybe it will make you feel a little love too.”.
For fans who want to lock in the release, Hazel Eyes is available to pre-order in various digital and physical formats right now.
Smith also has a live date coming up: they’ll perform on Friday, June 26, at The Booking.com Theater at the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center (SNMVC).

Hazel Eyes on Aug 21?? Guess I’ll be staring at my calendar.
Okay but “My Guy” is catchy already so I’m not mad. Sam Smith talks about it being personal like… yeah we get it, love songs lol. Still though, Electric Lady Studios is kinda iconic.
Wait I thought Sam Smith already had an album called Hazel Eyes? Like I swear I saw something about it years ago. Also Feist and those string people… is this the same as that other thing with the “fairytale” vibe? Not saying it’s bad I just don’t know what’s what.
“My Guy” tease?? If romance is the center of it then I’m sure it’s gonna be like super sad then happy then sad again. And co-produced by Sam Smith and Simon Aldred and David Odlum—so basically Sam Smith produced it with like… their whole team. Why does it sound like it’s about New York and personal growth but also “requited love” like that can’t be real lol.
