Sam Levinson Defends Euphoria’s OnlyFans Plot in Season 3

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson is pushing back on backlash over Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie turning to sex work in the show’s third and final season, defending the OnlyFans storyline as part of a broader look at money, validation, and the pressure young people face
In Euphoria’s third and final season, Cassie Howard’s spiral didn’t stay quiet for long. Sydney Sweeney’s character turns to sex work with Maddy’s (Alexa Demie) help as her manager, and several scenes involving Cassie quickly spread online—sparking backlash toward the already polarizing HBO drama.
Now, series creator Sam Levinson is defending the storyline that’s fueled so much of the reaction. During an appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher, Levinson argued that the show’s OnlyFans plot isn’t a fringe topic—it’s woven into something massive and lucrative.
Levinson framed OnlyFans as “a massive enterprise. ” saying it’s “making as much money as Hollywood.” He added that it’s not something reserved for a small corner of culture. “It’s not a niche business, it is a massive enterprise. And so if you’re young. you’re going … ‘I don’t want to go work in a nine to five at this place or that thing. Well, maybe I can just start taking photos of myself?’”.
His larger point is tied to what he wants the show to examine. Levinson said he was interested in “the long-term consequences of that,” and the role social media validation plays in shaping how people pursue money and approval.
He pointed to the messaging young people absorb online. describing a scenario where someone is told they’re “the product” and “the brand. ” and then hears the pressure that follows: “and now you’re 18 years old. and you’re going well. ‘How do I make money?’” Levinson said his interest was in “chasing that desire. that kind of fast cash. ” calling it “an interesting thing to kind of explore.”.
Levinson also said Euphoria takes a “fairly critical look at it,” and described how that pursuit can hollow out the individual. “You know, you’re constantly just depending on the likes and external validation,” he added.
The storyline has become even more pointed because it’s grounded in Cassie’s arc as the show approaches its end. Sydney Sweeney, for her part, addressed Cassie’s character arc and defended the racy scenes she filmed for the final season.
