Sad13’s 1331 returns—13 songs shaped by injury

By the time Sadie Dupuis hits play, the idea is already in motion. Sad13—her project under the name that’s basically an alias and a mood—has a new mixtape on the way: 1331. The promise is specific and a little strange in the best way: 13 “1 minute long-ish songs,” three of them available now.
“Am Now Completely Invisible,” “Art Institute,” and “Watermelon Manicure” are out today, inviting listeners into a world built from tight bursts rather than long arcs. The mixtape follows 2020’s Haunted Painting, and it’s due July 10 via Exploding in Sound.
Dupuis framed the title as more than a number on a cover. “1331 signifies palindromes, mirrors, warped balance,” she explained in a statement. She also tied the structure to the way her own identity has split and stitched over time—“It’s a mash-up of two ages in the lyrics.” In that version of the story. her alias “sad thirteen” points to “teenage moodiness. ” while “thirty-one bookmarks young adulthood. ” which she says “brought me more radical clarity.”.
The songs themselves were made by Dupuis end-to-end. She wrote. recorded. and performed the album in its entirety. switching across electric. baritone. and acoustic guitar. plus bass. piano. synths. organ. percussion. and more. That sense of control over every piece has always been part of Sad13’s texture—what’s different here is what it cost her. and how the recording process bent around it.
In June of 2024, Dupuis was injured in a bicycle accident that shattered her elbow. The aftermath required “both reconstructive surgeries and a year of rehab,” and she didn’t dress it up. “My body didn’t have the juice,” she commented. Still, she kept moving forward: “But tracking in little bursts over more time gave me broader influences.”.
The tracklist reads like a set of scenes you can’t linger in—fast, clipped, and sequenced to land hard. 1331 includes:
1. I Am Now Completely Invisible
2. Art Institute
3. Watermelon Manicure
4. Six Ways
5. Pretty Little Lifers
6. People’s Loser
7. Locust Releaser
8. Friend of the P
9. Sorry for Your Entertainment
10. Kissing
11. Mean, Vindictive, Arrogant
12. Hopeful but Not Optimistic
13. Third Rodeo.
There’s a quiet contradiction running through the release that feels impossible to ignore: the mixtape is built from palindromes. mirrors. and “warped balance. ” yet it came together through a body that had to be repaired before it could keep working. In a project defined by rapid songwriting rhythms. the recovery didn’t slow the music down so much as it changed how it got made—smaller bursts stretched over more time. and a sound shaped by what she says became “broader influences.”.

13 songs and they’re like a minute? Kinda sounds like TikTok music but I guess if it’s sad it’s sad.
Wait so she got hurt on a bike and then released an EP called 1331 like it’s a palindrome mirror thing?? I don’t really get the title but the injury part is messed up.
Bicycle accident shattered her elbow… so does that mean the songs are “invisible” like she can’t play guitar anymore lol. Also 1331 means teen moodiness and 31 is like adulthood? That seems backwards to me.
I saw “13 songs” and was like oh cool, but then it’s all 1-minute-ish?? Kinda disappointing ngl. But if she did everything end-to-end and had to do surgeries/recovery that’s actually pretty hardcore, even if I don’t fully understand the whole palindrome thing.
