Ruud vs Paul: Quarterfinal spot hangs on five sets
Casper Ruud takes a heavy moneyline lead over Tommy Paul heading into Friday’s French Open match, with the quarterfinals at stake. Ruud rebounded after a first-round scare and swept in Round 2, while Paul dropped a set early and then won six straight. The bett
Casper Ruud knew the French Open can punish you for blinking. On Friday, he’ll try to do more than survive: he’ll try to move a step closer to the quarterfinals with Tommy Paul waiting across the net.
The matchup comes with a trip to the French Open quarterfinals on the line. and the odds reflect how much the market expects Ruud to control the early momentum. Casper Ruud is listed at -272 on the moneyline, while Tommy Paul sits at +207. The total is set at 37.5 games, with the Over priced at -115 and the Under at -125.
Friday’s match is scheduled for May 29 at 9:20 a.m. EST, with HBO Max listed as the way to watch.
Ruud’s path to Friday started with a jolt. He took the first two sets in the first round, then had to fight his way through to a five-set win. In Round 2, he looked steadier, sweeping Hamad Medjedovic.
Paul’s start to the tournament played out differently. He dropped his first set of the tournament, then didn’t lose another—winning six straight matches. In Round 2, Paul backed that run with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Lorenzo Sonego.
Their head-to-head tilts toward Ruud, but only slightly in the specific story being written. Ruud has won four of their six matches, and he has won the lone meeting between them on clay. They haven’t played since 2024.
French Open history adds its own weight to Friday’s stakes. Ruud has made deep runs in Paris before—reaching the final in 2022 and again in 2023—yet he has still not captured the title. His most recent semifinal appearance came in 2024, where he lost to Alexander Zverev. Last year, his tournament ended in the second round.
Paul’s French Open timeline is shorter, but sharper. He reached the quarterfinals last year for the first time, winning just five games in three sets against Carlos Alcaraz. This time, he’ll need an upset to keep the momentum going.
The numbers around fatigue and time on court don’t point clearly to either player. Neither should have much of an advantage, with both having played between five and six hours across their first two matches. That includes just over two hours in their second-round matches.
What stands out in the setup is the way the match is priced—Ruud is the expected winner, but the total market leaves room for tension. Ruud has the bigger clay edge in their history, yet Paul’s form since that early set drop has been consistent.
The betting angle is simple: take the Over. The expectation isn’t that Paul steals it straight. It’s that the match stretches—long enough to clear 37.5 games. A five-set outcome is part of the plan as well, with 5 Sets (+235) described as something worth sprinkling.
Best bet: OVER 37.5 (-115). A secondary look: 5 Sets (+235).

Ruud -272 like that’s gonna happen easy lol
I don’t get tennis odds at all. If Paul is +207 doesn’t that mean he’s like guaranteed to win or what? Also 37.5 games seems random, who even makes that up.
HBO Max? That’s wild, I thought French Open was like only on cable. Anyway Ruud needs to stop “blinking”??? Sounds like sports astrology. Paul won 6 straight so I’m worried the market is asleep
I watched a clip where they said Ruud controls momentum and then he almost lost round 1 anyway. So basically he can’t blink but also he already blinked once? I’ll take the Under because in 5 sets it always feels like more games should’ve happened. French Open punishes you for blinking… yeah like my kid on the iPad, just can’t.
