Russia eyes jet-powered Shaheds for half of strikes
jet-powered drones – Ukraine’s top commander says Russia plans to push jet-powered drone attacks to 50% of its long-range strikes, a shift he argues will be harder to intercept than the propeller-driven systems Ukraine has faced for months. Kyiv says it has adapted with a layered
On a Thursday post, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi laid out a change that would make Ukraine’s drone defenses work against a moving target. The commander in chief of Ukraine’s forces said Russia is planning to raise the share of jet-powered attack drones to 50% of its long-range drone attacks against Ukraine.
Syrskyi wrote that “The enemy is constantly changing its UAV tactics, increasing their numbers, and improving their quality.” He added that the shift “presents new challenges that require a timely response,” without offering evidence for the estimate of Russia’s plans.
Jet-powered uncrewed systems. Syrskyi said. are much faster and harder to intercept than the propeller-driven delta-wing drones Russia uses by the thousands. The Kremlin’s most commonly used long-range strike drone remains the Geran-2. which is Russia’s analog of the Iranian Shahed-136 loitering munition.
The names of what comes next matter. Kyiv has anticipated for months that Russia would expand production and use of jet-powered drones that its current air defenses could struggle to counter at scale. The Geran-3 is closely related to the Shahed-238, a drone reported to fly at over 205 mph. A later version. the Geran-4. has been said by Ukrainian intelligence to fly at speeds of over 300 mph; it is described as having a more powerful engine and a shorter nose.
That expectation is colliding with what Ukraine says it has built to meet the existing threat. Kyiv’s forces now use a combination of electronic warfare, mobile machine-gun fire groups, interceptor missiles, and interceptor drones. These interceptor drones are small quadcopters designed to intercept and crash into Gerans. and Syrskyi said on Monday that Ukrainian forces used interceptor drones to take down 3. 500 Russian long-range strike and decoy drones in the month of May.
But speed is turning into a financial and operational headache. The top speed of turbojet Gerans may prove difficult for Ukraine’s interceptor drones. which are often quadcopters that cost about $2. 500 to $6. 000 each. The fastest speed ever recorded for these types of drones is 408 mph. though it was achieved by a quadcopter flying in a straight line without a payload.
The pressure to adjust is not only battlefield-facing. In March, Ukrainian drone advisor Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov warned local manufacturers to begin developing solutions to battle turbojet Gerans. He wrote: “There is no need to become the ‘one hundred and first’ manufacturer of drones against the current Shaheds. ” adding. “We need to work for the future.”.

So Russia just upgraded the drones? Cool cool, hope Ukraine upgraded the counter too.
Jet-powered Shaheds… wait aren’t Shaheds already jet? I’m confused. Also how do they even know it’s 50% like did someone count them, or is this just vibes from a commander?
This is gonna be harder to intercept because it’s faster, but I feel like they say that every few weeks and then it ends up being the same game. If Ukraine’s layered defenses are so good, why do they need all the names like Geran-3 and 4. Sounds like a marketing thing tbh.
They’re saying moving targets and 50% jet drones like that’s some math problem. Maybe they should just shoot everything down with lasers? Idk, I saw a video once where they said Ukraine uses electronic jamming but then my cousin said jamming doesn’t work when they fly low… so which is it. Either way this feels like it’s gonna get worse.
