The Giants didn’t just lose a player in a routine OTA session. Roy Robertson-Harris tore his Achilles during yesterday’s practice, sidelining a key piece of their defense right as Organized Team Activities were getting underway.

Robertson-Harris signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Giants a year ago and started all 17 games last season. At OTAs, he had been working with the first-string defense, which only makes the timing feel sharper for a unit already short on certainty.

An Achilles tendon tear is almost always a season-ending injury. There’s a narrow possibility of a fast recovery—if a player tears his Achilles in May, he could play by the end of the year—but that path is described as a long shot.

This is the second offseason Achilles blow to hit the team. Rookie cornerback Thaddeus Dixon tore his Achilles last week.

And on the defensive front, the injury arrives after another major shift. Last month, the Giants traded away their best defensive lineman, Dexter Lawrence. With Robertson-Harris now joining the list, they’ve effectively lost two defensive linemen who started all 17 games last season.

That’s why the Giants’ next moves matter more than usual. Free agent signings DJ Reader and Shelby Harris become even more important, and the development of sixth-round rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis takes on added urgency as they absorb the absence of another starter.

The sequence is plain: a top-tier offseason plan hit a wall during practice, then quickly collided with earlier personnel losses. Between Lawrence’s departure and two different Achilles tears during offseason work. the defense the Giants built around last season’s starters is already looking different before the regular season even begins.
