Rory McIlroy said he was not playing well enough to be ‘disappointed’ that he could not overcome Wyndham Clark and win BMW championship
It was all there for Rory McIlroy to take advantage of his opportunity to bring home the BMW Championship in Sunday’s final round. While he went into the final round trailing by five strokes, he was tied with Wyndham Clark for the lead by the 11th hole.

However, McIlroy was unable to build on that momentum in the tournament’s final holes. He struggled down the stretch while Clark found his game and birdied the final three holes of the tournament to finish with a 17 under par score of 263 and win his third tournament of the year.
Clark will go into the Tour Championship next week at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta with a chance to win the FedEx Cup and earn the PGA Tour’s top player honors.
Clark won the BMW by three strokes over second-place finisher Patrick Cantlay and four strokes over McIlroy, who finished alone in third place.
McIlroy was fairly straight-forward about his inability to close out the tournament with a victory after rallying to tie the score during the back nine of the final round. He spoke on CBS after Clark had clinched his victory. “I had my opportunity, but I don’t think I can be too disappointed. I’m probably not playing well enough to be disappointed that I didn’t win. I had my chances and I started to hit some good shots and I hit some good putts that didn’t go in.
“Wyndham stepped up when he needed to and his birdie on 16 was huge. The way he played the last three holes showed a lot of character.”
