Story will appear for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, and Anthony will play with the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday.
Trevor Story and Roman Anthony officially have their rehab assignments set as they prepare for their late-season returns.
A day after Chad Tracy revealed the duo was “close” to making rehab appearances, he’s since announced that Story will play for the Worcester Red Sox on Sunday. Anthony will join the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday. Additionally, Isiah Kiner-Falefa will play in Worcester on Wednesday.
“We got all three of those guys over the course of the next handful of days ready to get started,” Tracy said. “Where we’re at, guys banged up and all that, good players that are getting healthy is a good sign.”
Tracy did acknowledge that simply making it to the rehab assignments isn’t the finish line.
“Obviously we still got to get them through the rehab outings, it’s a combination of physically getting them right, feeling good, also accumulating some at-bats,” Tracy added. “So, there’s still work to be done, but having three of those guys going out getting healthy is exciting.”
The Red Sox have sputtered over the last week or so, likely due at least partially to the thin lineup gathering bumps and bruises down the stretch of the season. And with Masataka Yoshida exiting Saturday’s game with a leg injury, there may be another spot to fill soon.
Story and Anthony were permanent fixtures of the early 2026 Red Sox before their respective injuries. And Kiner-Falefa was a surprisingly good addition at shortstop in Story’s absence, before he too suffered an injury.
It’s clear Anthony will immediately be a starter again when he’s ready to return to Boston. Story and Kiner-Falefa have less defined roles, but would also be huge helps to the Red Sox if for no other reason than added depth.
This next week of rehab assignments should go a long way towards gearing Boston up for a postseason run that looked improbable merely 60 days ago.
