Roger Goodell’s future as NFL commissioner has been the subject of conversation for months, especially with his old contract set to run out in 2027. Owners made it clear they wanted him to stick around to help navigate major upcoming decisions, including new broadcast deals and a possible 18-game season.
Potential successors had been linked to the role for a while, including NFL media chief Brian Rolapp, before he left in June 2025 to become CEO of the PGA Tour. For now, though, talk of who might eventually take over has officially been put on pause. On Sunday, it was reported that Goodell signed a new four-year extension, keeping him in charge through the 2030 season.

Goodell’s legacy is a mix of massive business success and a fair share of controversy, which is probably true of any league commissioner. Since taking over in 2006, he’s helped the NFL’s revenue climb past $23 billion a year, locked in record-setting media deals, and pushed the league’s global expansion into international games. This season alone, the NFL will host nine international games across seven countries, including Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Under Goodell, the NFL has become a global spectacle, with countries around the world wanting a piece of the action.
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Over the years, Goodell has taken heat for how he’s handled player discipline, concussion and safety issues, and the league’s slow progress in hiring minority coaches and executives.

Goodell becomes an easy target not just because he’s the face of one of the biggest entertainment brands in the world, but because he’s paid more than any player in the league. Forbes reported in February 2026 that Goodell has been earning around $64 million annually in recent years, making him by far the highest-paid commissioner in American sports. For reference, the NFL’s highest-paid player right now is Patrick Mahomes, earning around $63.1 million per year.
Terms of Goodell’s new four-year extension haven’t been officially released, but given the league’s continued growth, it’s fair to assume that number will only climb.
