ROG Ally refresh leans on new AMD chip

next ROG – A leaked ASUS listing points to another ROG Ally handheld built around an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor—more of a mid-cycle update than a full redesign. With key details like display, battery, RAM, and storage still unknown, the biggest question for fans is w

A new ROG Ally handheld from ASUS is starting to creep out of the shadows, and the leak comes with a familiar promise: a faster chip. But for players who’ve watched handheld screens and expectations change in a hurry, it’s also carrying the uneasy feeling of an upgrade that won’t feel like a leap.

The latest listing suggests ASUS is preparing another ROG Ally device. The headline detail—what appears to be driving the whole update—is an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor. The framing of the leak points toward a mid-generation refresh. not a true successor that redesigns the platform from the ground up.

That matters because processor upgrades, while always welcome, don’t exist in a vacuum. The listing reportedly doesn’t show much beyond the chip. leaving other essentials completely unconfirmed: display technology. battery capacity. RAM. storage options. and even the final design. Without those specifics. it’s hard to get excited beyond the silicon itself. and the device starts to sound more like an internal tune-up than a new chapter for the ROG Ally.

For ASUS to move this forward in a way that feels meaningful, it would likely have to win where handheld gaming has become more demanding. And the display is where that pressure shows.

Handheld owners now have something like a baseline expectation. The market has shifted since the original ROG Ally arrived. with the Steam Deck OLED raising the bar on screen quality and larger-screen devices becoming more common. If ASUS were to bring an OLED panel—or even a roomier 8-inch display—to the next ROG Ally. that could instantly change how the device feels day to day.

But early clues point in the opposite direction. If the references in the product identifier are accurate, ASUS may be sticking with a 7-inch display. That’s where the disappointment could land hardest: gamers tend to notice the screen constantly. not just when they’re benchmarking a new CPU. A 7-inch LCD-based ROG Ally refresh. even with a faster processor. risks coming across as a spec bump in a market that has already moved its expectations forward.

There’s also a question of what ASUS is choosing not to do. Earlier speculation suggested the company might experiment with Intel’s Arc-powered gaming silicon. This leak, however, keeps AMD in the driver’s seat once again.

So at the moment, one thing looks clear: a new ROG Ally is on the way. Whether it feels genuinely new—or just newly powered—is going to depend on whether ASUS can make the screen and the rest of the handheld feel current, not just refreshed.

  1. If it’s still a 7-inch screen then why do we care about a new AMD processor like at all? Steam Deck OLED exists, come on. This feels like a marketing refresh.

  2. Wait I thought they were switching to Intel Arc? Now it’s AMD again… so which is it, did they change their mind 3 times already? Also the battery stuff being unknown is kinda sus.

  3. These handheld updates always sound better than they are. Like they say “faster chip” but half the time it’s just benchmarks and the screen is still mid. I’m just gonna keep my current one until they finally make it an 8-inch OLED and stop teasing. Also what’s the point if RAM/storage aren’t even listed yet??
