RKBDI leak reveals Android’s coming Noto 3D emojis

Android’s Noto – Google says it will revamp all 4,000 Android emojis into a Noto 3D style “later this year.” A leaked library shared via a Magisk module lets testers preview the new look early—though some variation emojis won’t render without a required ZWJ character.
Google’s promise to make Android emojis “more alive” is about to look a lot more dimensional. Last week, the company announced it would revamp all 4,000 emojis supported on Android into a “Noto 3D” style, but now a leak has given early eyes a closer look.
Developer RKBDI got access to the redesigned emojis ahead of their official rollout and packaged them into a Magisk module for testing.. With the module installed, users can experience the emojis before they officially arrive.. And while the screenshots shared from the library show only a fraction of what’s coming. RKBDI’s Magisk package is meant to provide access to all of the emojis in the set.
There’s a catch.. Some emojis won’t display properly in the preview because a ZWJ (Zero-Width Joiner) character is required to combine multiple emojis into a variation emoji—and that character is missing in the test setup.. So even in a preview that’s clearly pushing toward a 3D look. the details matter for how emojis actually render on-device.
The designs aren’t uniformly dramatic.. Many emojis look like they’re following the same familiar shapes. just with a more noticeable 3D appearance in some cases.. Google’s broader plan. meanwhile. is set to roll out the “Noto 3D” emojis to Android users starting later this year. with Pixel devices expected to receive them first.
The rollout path Google has outlined points beyond the device itself: it’s expected to appear through Gboard. YouTube. and Gmail.. But the company hasn’t clarified whether other devices will get the update in the same way.. That uncertainty lands on a familiar problem for Android users—many OEMs customize the emoji set as part of their UX skins—so it’s unclear which manufacturers will adopt Google’s new Noto 3D TTF file as-is. and which will alter it.
What ties the timeline together is a single chain: Google announced the Noto 3D revamp of all 4. 000 supported emojis last week. the library surfaced via RKBDI’s Magisk module before the official launch. and the promised availability is pegged to Pixel devices first later this year. then broader distribution via Gboard. YouTube. and Gmail—while the leak’s preview limitations come from the missing ZWJ needed for variation emoji combinations.

So they’re making emojis 3D now?? I can’t tell if this is cool or just more phone bloat.
I saw something about “Noto 3D” and Magisk, but isn’t Magisk like… illegal rooting? So how are they previewing it if you need special stuff? Also why would ZWJ even matter to normal people lol.
Wait, the emojis won’t render unless you add a ZWJ character? So like… Google teased it but it doesn’t work without a text symbol that nobody has. Sounds like another Pixel-only thing where everyone else gets the broken version.
Magisk module leak, sure. Then they say Pixel first later this year then Gboard/YouTube/Gmail. But my phone’s not a Pixel so am I just stuck with 2D forever? And the article keeps saying “details matter” like it’s a software dev thing, not emojis. I just want the sunglasses emoji to look cool.
