Rivian sets June 9 for first R2 deliveries

Rivian has confirmed the first R2 SUV deliveries will arrive on June 9, as the company pushes its more affordable model toward a broader market and targets up to 25,000 deliveries this year.
On June 9, Rivian will finally hand over the keys to its new R2 SUV to the first customers. After months of ramping up for the launch, the automaker has pinned down that delivery date with unusual clarity, turning what had been a waiting game into a calendar mark.
Rivian says the R2 will initially be available in a trim that starts just under $60,000. It also announced plans for a “standard” version starting at $48,490 in 2027—an important step for a vehicle positioned to go after a much larger slice of the market than Rivian’s current R1 lineup.
The company is even more aggressive with its timeline for lower prices. It has teased a further more affordable version “starting around $45,000” late next year, keeping alive the pricing push Rivian has promoted since the R2 reveal in 2024.
Rivian’s expectations for the R2 are hard to miss. Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe has described the vehicle as “maybe the most important thing we’ve launched to date.” The stakes are clear inside the company’s own math: Rivian is betting on an extremely fast ramp-up. with as many as 25. 000 vehicles delivered by the end of this year.
That kind of speed isn’t just about sales volume. Rivian is also aiming to change its financial trajectory—ultimately hoping the R2 and its hatchback sibling, the R3, will help the company turn a profit for the first time since its founding in 2009.
The June 9 delivery date, then, isn’t simply a product milestone. It’s the moment the plan starts to prove itself on schedule, as Rivian moves from promising a broader, more affordable lineup to counting deliveries—and, eventually, profits—against expectations.
