Rick and Morty: The Anime Claws Back After Ratings

Even with poor early reviews, Rick and Morty: The Anime has reentered HBO Max’s worldwide TV charts—showing how quickly audience habits can outpace critics.

On the same streaming week when Rick and Morty keeps broadcasting its 9th Season, Adult Swim’s other sci-fi bet is quietly clawing its way back into view.

Rick and Morty: The Anime—an anime spin-off of Rick and Morty—has reemerged on the streaming charts, landing at #9 on HBO Max’s Top TV Shows worldwide earlier this week. It sits between Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and The Other Bennet Sister on that list.

The comeback is striking because the show didn’t start out warmly. Since its release, Rick and Morty: The Anime received poor reviews from fans and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a 50% critics score and an 18% audience score.

The spin-off arrived in 2024 and focuses on a different variant of the characters. Joe Daniels and Gabriel Regojo voice the leads in the English dub, and while it’s a spin-off, it requires knowledge of the first six seasons of the main series.

In the bigger picture, the main Rick and Morty series continues to dominate the spotlight. The regular show is placed at #2 in the HBO Max spot, even as Rick and Morty: The Anime climbs in the rankings.

It’s also not the only Rick and Morty offshoot Adult Swim is steering. Adult Swim has announced spin-offs for the popular TV show—one currently in the works and another already released that was described as an “incoherent disaster.”

And for what comes next, Adult Swim has greenlit a spin-off called President Curtis. The fictional sci-fi president role will be reprised by Keith David. Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash are also joining the cast, and Adult Swim released a teaser in May. In that teaser, Rick and Morty hinted that President Curtis would be like X-Files mixed with National Treasure.

A full plot for President Curtis has not been revealed, and it’s currently unknown how many episodes the series will include. The show is scheduled to come out in July 2026.

Meanwhile, Adult Swim has confirmed that Rick and Morty will continue beyond Season 9, having renewed the series through Season 12.

Rick and Morty: The Anime is available to stream on HBO Max, alongside Rick and Morty.

The sequence is straightforward: a show lands with weak Rotten Tomatoes scores, then still resurfaces high on HBO Max’s worldwide chart. The gap between critical reception and viewing momentum is where the real story sits—right in the numbers, right in the ranking.
