Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and CNN anchor Dana Bash clashed over vaccines, COVID-19 and the nation’s measles outbreak during a State of the Union interview on Sunday, August 2. The heated exchange later prompted CNN to release a statement defending Bash’s questioning.
During the more than 20-minute interview, Bash and Kennedy Jr. discussed childhood vaccines, autism research, the Trump administration’s pandemic response and Dr. Anthony Fauci‘s legacy. The debate came as the United States recorded its highest number of measles cases in 35 years, with Bash pressing Kennedy Jr. over his long-standing vaccine skepticism now that he oversees federal health policy.
“You have been placing nearly all the blame on the COVID pandemic and the way that the U.S. responded to it squarely on Dr. Fauci,” Bash asked Kennedy Jr. “But of course, he worked for President Trump. Does President Trump also deserve some of the blame?”
“Trump, as you recall, wanted to end the lockdowns. I think the thing that did the most damage to our country was the lockdowns,” Kennedy Jr. responded. “The lockdown that shut down 3.5 million businesses in our country with no due process, no just compensation. All of our churches closed, our schools and our children are still paying the price for that.”
“And yet we had the worst outcome of any country in the world … We have the highest death rate from COVID of any nation on earth.”
Bash pushed back, citing public health experts who say the U.S. death toll was driven by a combination of factors, including high rates of chronic illness, gaps in the healthcare system and vaccine misinformation.
Kennedy Jr. then put Bash on blast, criticizing the media, “You weren’t doing your job and your job is a fierce skepticism toward authority. You weren’t doing that. You were beating up on people who were dissenting.”
As the conversation moved to measles, Bash noted that cases had climbed roughly tenfold between 2024 and 2025, with more than 2,300 recorded so far this year and about 93% of those infections occurring in unvaccinated people.
When Bash asked Kennedy Jr. whether he would accept some responsibility for the outbreak, he replied, “Absolutely not,” and characterized the surge as “international” in origin.
The exchange became more heated when Bash questioned Kennedy Jr. about vaccines and autism.
Bash pressed on whether childhood vaccines cause autism, as she told him that repeated studies, including research cited by the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Pediatrics, had found no such link.
Kennedy Jr. dismissed those findings, insisting that existing research had failed to adequately study vaccines given to infants younger than six months and accusing Bash of leaning on outside experts rather than reviewing the underlying data herself.
The interview reached its sharpest moment when Kennedy Jr. suggested Bash could not fully understand the science because she was “not a scientist.”
“You’re not either,” Bash shot back.
CNN later issued a statement defending Bash’s reporting, saying that asking tough, substantive questions of public officials is a journalist’s job and that the network stood behind both Bash and its pandemic coverage.
