Revolution’s Alhassan Yusuf wins MLS’s player of the week award following first career hat trick

Alhassan Yusuf was announced as Major League Soccer’s Player of the Matchday on Wednesday, following his hat trick in the Revolution’s 3-0 victory at D.C. United.

The midfielder’s performance matched the best goal-scoring season of his professional career. He scored three goals in 2021-22 for Belgium’s Royal Antwerp, from whom New England signed him two summers ago.

That 2024 season also was the last time a Revolution player won the league’s weekly award, which is chosen via a media/fan vote. Goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic was honored in June 2024.

Yusuf, 26, had never had a multi-goal game as a professional before Wednesday. His first was the 13th hat trick in MLS this season, and made the Nigerian the 10th different Revolution player with a three-goal game, joining Taylor Twellman (3), Pat Noonan (2), Alberto Naveda, Chris Brown, Kheli Dube, Zack Schilawski, Kei Kamara, Carles Gil, and Giacomo Vrioni.

Vrioni’s came during the Leagues Cup at Gillette Stadium on July 26, 2023. Kamara had the most recent in MLS play, against Orlando City on Sept. 2, 2017. Noonan’s second, on June 2, 2004, at Kansas City, was the only one scored on the road before Yusuf’s.

Yusuf’s five goals this season put him second in scoring on the team behind Gil’s seven. The Revolution (10-7-3, 33 points) sit fourth in the Eastern Conference, and play their lone home game across a five-week stretch on Sunday afternoon, when they host New York City FC.
