Republicans Revolt Over Trump’s Beef Tariff Relief: Will ‘Further Harm’ MAGA

Conservative lawmakers and pundits alike spoke out on the internet Friday after President Donald Trump announced a new deal that will temporarily lift certain tariffs on ground beef imports, with Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) warning “this will further harm” American ranchers, “most of whom are MAGA Republicans.”
Trump took to Truth Social early Friday morning to announce the arrangement, writing:
Today, I concluded a deal to substantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families. As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history. As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff. We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP
Ground beef prices hovered near record highs in July, Bloomberg reported, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing the average price reached $7.116 per pound — up 9.4% from the same month last year.
In addition to Sheehy, Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) also chimed in Friday, writing, “I’m extremely disappointed by this decision from the White House. We all want lower grocery prices, but as I’ve said for months, we cannot do it at the expense of American producers.”
