Another Canadian is on his way to La Liga.
Striker Jonathan David is set to join Atletico Madrid from Juventus on a season-long loan deal with a buy option, soccer insider Fabrizio Romano reported Monday.
According to Romano, the deal will have a 25 million Euro (C$40.2 million) non-mandatory buy option once the loan comes to an end at the end of the season in June 2027.
David, 26, joined Juventus ahead of the 2025-26 season, but struggled to find form with the Torino outfit, scoring only eight goals and adding five assists in 46 games across all competitions.
Over his final 13 appearances with Juventus in Serie A, David managed only one goal.
David’s form also took a hit at the World Cup with Canada. He scored a hat trick against Qatar in the group stage but was held off the score sheet in Canada’s four other games.
It’s a stark contrast to David’s production levels from seasons past with Lille in Ligue 1, where he managed 109 goals and 31 assists in 232 games across all competitions and won a domestic trophy with the club in the 2020-21 season.
David will now head to the Spanish capital as Atletico work through the potential transfer of star forward Julian Alvarez, who has been linked to Arsenal and Barcelona throughout the transfer window.
He’ll join fellow Canadians Tajon Buchanan, Nathan Saliba and Tani Oluwaseyi — all of whom play for Villarreal — as national team players to suit up in the top Spanish league.
