COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Angel Reese was already controlling the glass when the game began to slip away from Washington.
Reese finished with 18 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. and Rhyne Howard added 19 points and six steals as the Atlanta Dream routed the Washington Mystics 109-77 on Saturday night. It was Atlanta’s highest-scoring game this season. a blowout that came with a sudden jolt when Mystics coach Sidney Johnson was ejected late in the third quarter.
With 3:52 left in the third quarter, Johnson was called for two quick technical fouls. Even after efforts from Mystics assistant coaches and players to calm him down. an angry Johnson was eventually escorted off the court by security. Assistant coach Emre Vatansever took over for the rest of the game.
Atlanta kept rolling. Reese had her fourth consecutive double-double and seventh of the season. and she also recorded four of the Dream’s season-high 16 steals. The Mystics couldn’t slow down Atlanta’s momentum after Howard’s 3-pointer gave the Dream the lead for good with 3:44 left in the first quarter. and Atlanta led by double figures for the final 26-plus minutes.
Kiki Iriafen scored 24 points for the Dream. while Sonia Citron returned after a one-game absence due to a foot injury and scored 18 points with six assists. Allisha Gray had 15 points, and Jordin Canada and Madina Okot each scored 11. Sika Kone and rookie Isobel Borlase, who entered the game with 20 points this season, added nine points apiece.
The stat line showed how complete the advantage was for Atlanta. The Dream set season highs for free throws attempted (41) and free throws made (32), hit 13 3s, and outrebounded Washington 42-26.
Atlanta has now won four straight against the Mystics, who lead the series 34-33.
Next up, the Mystics host Indiana on Monday. The Dream play Tuesday at Chicago.
