Red Sox star Garrett Crochet’s expected role if he returns from injury this season

Garrett Crochet could give the Boston Red Sox a big lift late in the regular season. He has missed significant time but now looks closer to returning. However, the team plans to use the left-hander in a different role than before his injury.

Crochet has been out since April 29 with left shoulder inflammation. The Red Sox moved him to the 60-day injured list in June. After a long recovery, the team hopes he can come back before the regular season ends.

MLB.com’s latest injury update says Crochet now throws from 50, 60 feet with more intensity. If he finishes his throwing program and returns to the mound, the Red Sox plan to use him as a reliever. They will not put him right back in the starting rotation.

This plan helps Boston bring Crochet back slowly and reduces the strain on his shoulder. He could give the Red Sox a strong arm for the end of the season. If they make the playoffs, he could help there too. Crochet entered 2026 coming off an impressive 2025 campaign. He went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA and 255 strikeouts over 205 1/3 innings. However, he made only six starts this season before the injury and posted a 6.30 ERA.

Crochet will likely return late in the regular season at best. Boston will focus on making sure he is healthy. If he does come back, his presence in the bullpen could give the Red Sox a big boost when the games are most important.

Crochet’s versatility and previous success as a starter also give the Red Sox options heading into the postseason. If he adapts well to the bullpen, manager Chad Tracy could use him as a key weapon. He could pitch in important matchups and high-leverage situations.
