Red Sox place Garrett Crochet on 60-day IL

Garrett Crochet’s setback after live throwing has sent him to the Red Sox’s 60-day injured list, extending his absence past the original 15-day timeline and opening a roster spot for Joe La Sorsa.
Garrett Crochet thought he’d be able to push through. Instead, his live throwing sessions were halted by a setback that only confirmed what the Red Sox didn’t want to hear: his pitching discomfort was still there.
On Friday afternoon, Boston moved Crochet to the 60-day injured list. The decision came after he was initially placed on the 15-day injured list at the end of April, with the hope he could return soon after he became eligible.
The move also had an immediate roster impact. By transferring Crochet to the 60-day IL, the Red Sox were able to open a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired reliever Joe La Sorsa.
For Crochet, the change is brutal in practical terms. He’ll be out until at least June 25. It’s also a timeline that makes the original expectation feel like a mirage: he was already about 40 days into his injury stint when Boston made the transfer. and he had said he didn’t think he’d be out much longer than the required 15 days.
Interim manager Chad Tracy explained what happened when Crochet’s throwing progressed. Back on May 31, Tracy said Crochet has “some lat tightness that kind of creeped up in the couple days of throwing after the live [BP],” and that the team was going to “back off on that for now.”
That tightness now stretches into a certainty of absence. Crochet, the Red Sox’s 2025 Cy Young runner-up, will miss at least two full months from the time of his initial injury.
Boston’s rotation has tried to absorb the loss. While it has produced multiple quality outings in Crochet’s absence—including Connelly Early. Sonny Gray. Ranger Suarez. and Payton Tolle—the ailment’s coincidence with other struggles has added pressure elsewhere. Brayan Bello’s difficulties have lined up with Crochet’s problem, and Bello has now been demoted to Triple-A Worcester. With both of those moves, Boston will have two of its projected 2026 starters out of the lineup completely.
The knock-on effects don’t stop with lineups and call-ups. As for Bello. he’ll join the WooSox on Sunday. though manager Iggy Suarez said he isn’t sure whether Bello will be in a starting role or coming out of the bullpen. Suarez framed it as something harder than baseball mechanics. “I can only imagine what he’s going through mentally. that’s something that’s tough to go through. ” he said.
Boston’s next chance to set its week’s tone comes quickly. La Sorsa will be available for the Red Sox on Friday night when they begin their series opener against the Yankees in the Bronx, with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
For the Red Sox, the central story is now simple and unforgiving: Crochet’s injury isn’t just keeping him out—it’s forcing Boston to plan around his absence for weeks longer than anyone hoped when he first went on the 15-day IL April 29.
